What happens when five plus generations collide in a single workplace? For Christian Nichles, founder of 1GenSolutions, this unprecedented convergence isn’t just a challenge. It’s an opportunity to radically improve how we work together. Drawing on over three decades of experience in human growth and development, Nichles has made it his mission to help organizations thrive by fostering what he calls “generational acuity.”
While diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives have become standard in many companies, Nichles noticed a gap: most efforts focused on understanding differences, not appreciating or leveraging them. Generational acuity, a term 1GenSolutions is in the process of trademarking, goes beyond mere awareness. It’s about genuinely valuing the unique perspectives and strengths each generation brings-and using that understanding to build more cohesive, productive teams.
“Acuity is more about learning, understanding, and appreciating,” Nichles explains. “It’s not just knowing we’re different. It’s investing in those differences, and sometimes even modeling them.” Imagine a seasoned executive who’s seen the evolution from dot-matrix printers to cloud computing, working alongside a Gen Z employee who’s never known life without a smartphone. Generational acuity helps both recognize and value what the other brings to the table.
Nichles’ journey began in the nonprofit sector, where he spent 27 years working with teenagers, encouraging them to make a difference in their communities. But after the pandemic, he started hearing from former mentees-now adults-who were struggling in toxic work environments. “I began to wonder if I’d failed them,” he admits. “Had I set up a whole generation to be dissatisfied at work?”
This soul-searching led to a pivot in 2023: the founding of 1GenSolutions. The company’s core mission is simple but powerful-help every person become 1% better each day, regardless of age, through speaking, coaching, and training centered on generational acuity.
We’re living through the largest shift in the American workforce since World War I. For the first time, more than five generations may work side-by-side, from Baby Boomers to Generation Z. This diversity brings both tension and opportunity. Miscommunication is rampant: younger employees complain of toxic environments, while older leaders lament that “millennials are so lazy.” Nichles challenges these assumptions with data and empathy, noting, for example, that millennials are the most likely to volunteer their time for charity. This is hardly a sign of laziness.
“Are they lazy or are you a bad leader?” he asks pointedly. “Typically, I either get asked to leave or I get a contract. There’s really nothing in between.”
1GenSolutions offers a proprietary assessment built around seven generational markers, such as cultural understanding and mental health. This tool provides organizations with an apples-to-apples comparison of how each generation views key workplace issues. For example, a Boomer might see mental health as something to “tough out,” while a Gen Z employee may expect open conversations and support.
The company’s services include:
Nichles also emphasizes the importance of mentoring and reverse mentoring, encouraging both older and younger employees to learn from each other. “It’s about everyone bringing their strengths to the table to further the mission and vision of the company.”
Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, 1GenSolutions is a true family affair, with Nichles’ wife and millennial daughter on staff. When he’s not helping clients, Nichles is likely serving at his church, cheering on Alabama football, or supporting his kids’ athletic pursuits.
As the workforce continues to evolve, companies that embrace generational acuity will be best positioned to attract, retain, and engage top talent. Nichles sums it up: “If you can get human beings to develop a better anthropology-to see each other as valuable, capable, and human-you’ll not only improve your bottom line, you’ll make your workplace a better place for everyone.”
For organizations ready to bridge the generational divide, 1GenSolutions offers more than just consulting-it offers a blueprint for a more connected, productive, and human workplace.
