How West Coast Taekwondo Became a Pillar of Strength in Orange County

By Carl Mitchell on September 16, 2025

West Coast Taekwondo - welcomes both kids and adults with one essential trait, a willingness to learn

When Heather Vaughn took over West Coast Taekwondo in 2021, it wasn’t just a business transition. It was a commitment to preserving a community cornerstone that had stood strong since 1992. While other dojos closed their doors during COVID-19, Heather stepped up not for profit, but for purpose.

For Heather, Taekwondo had always been more than kicks and belts. It was the anchor in her life since age 14 a place of emotional release, positive role models, and steady personal growth. After pursuing a path in healthcare that didn’t quite fit, Taekwondo called her back. With the support of long-time mentors and friends, she embraced the opportunity to lead and protect the legacy of West Coast Taekwondo.

Why West Coast Taekwondo Still Matters

West Coast Taekwondo - welcomes both kids and adults with one essential trait, a willingness to learn

In a world that often focuses on fast results and flash, West Coast Taekwondo remains refreshingly rooted in tradition and long-term growth. Their focus? Building confidence, character, and community.

Unlike many martial arts schools that highlight flashy instructors and trophies, Heather and her team have a different approach. They are instructors first, competitors second trained and certified through Taekwondo United. This distinction shows in their deep commitment to teaching and evolving both students and themselves.

Serving Orange County With Purpose

Located in the heart of Orange County, California, West Coast Taekwondo welcomes both kids and adults with one essential trait: a willingness to learn.

Students often come seeking self-defense, but they leave with much more improved focus, stronger self-esteem, and better physical health. The studio caters especially to those who want to improve mentally and physically over time.

And it’s not just for the neurotypical. Heather’s team has a special gift for working with children who have developmental differences such as autism and ADHD. They tailor lessons to meet every student where they are, offering compassionate guidance rooted in experience.

The Power of Community and Continuity

One of Heather’s top priorities was maintaining continuity. She kept the same name, same location, and same spirit that had served the community for decades. This decision helped former students and families find their way back even after the uncertainty of the pandemic.

The studio is more than a training space. It’s a legacy passed down, a familiar face in the neighborhood, and a safe place for people of all ages to grow.

A Master Team That Stands Out

Heather isn’t alone in her mission. She’s supported by a team of highly accomplished instructors:

  • Adam Gentry, a 7th-degree black belt, was Heather’s first instructor when she began learning taekwondo.
  • Steve Austin, another 7th-degree black belt, has an uncanny ability to teach young children with patience and skill.
  • Robert Marino, who is the youngest of the group is a 6th-degree black belt and brings youthful energy to the team.

Together, they form a united front of experienced, empathetic educators dedicated to lifting their students up one belt at a time.

A Business With Heart

West Coast Taekwondo is more than a business. They offer multi-family discounts and a scholarship program for families in need, ensuring that financial constraints don’t block access to training.

Though they aren’t formally tied to any nonprofit, they’ve collaborated with local cancer hospitals and participated in community-focused efforts throughout the years.

Lessons That Go Beyond the Mat

Heather’s journey from a nervous black belt in her first tournament to Owner of West Coast Taekwondo is a testament to perseverance.

In her words, “You can’t give up halfway.”

That spirit is what makes West Coast Taekwondo more than a martial arts studio. It’s a beacon of resilience, consistency, and care in a world that often forgets the power of slow, steady growth.

Whether you’re seeking physical strength, emotional stability, or a supportive community, this Orange County gem offers a place to build all three.
