In the heart of East Texas, a passion for animals and a deep understanding of canine communication are helping dog owners build stronger, more fulfilling relationships with their four-legged family members. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Clay Elrod, co-owner of Elrod’s Working Dogs in Marshall, to learn about the philosophy and heart behind his family-run business.

A Passion Born from a Need for Protection

For Clay and his wife, Nicole, what started as a personal quest for peace of mind blossomed into a lifelong dedication. “When I first got together with my wife… I was away from home a lot of time working,” Clay shared. Wanting to ensure his wife and young daughter were safe, they acquired their first protection-trained dog. This experience opened up a new world of understanding the control, intelligence, and environmental soundness a well-trained dog can possess. It sparked a journey from being dog owners to becoming deeply involved in the world of professional dog training, a journey that has taken them from California to their new home in Texas.

More Than a Job: A “Working Dog” Philosophy

What exactly is a “working dog”? At Elrod’s, the definition is beautifully simple and inclusive. It isn’t just about specific sports or high-level protection work. “To me, a working dog is when I get up and I walk out the door and my dog stands up and I call it over to me,” Clay explains. “What I want the dog to know is we’re doing this together and I’m the one in charge.”

This philosophy is about partnership. It’s about channeling a dog’s natural desires into activities they enjoy, making every interaction, even training, a positive and engaging game. By understanding what a dog loves to do, whether it’s chasing, being close to its owner, or solving problems, the team at Elrod’s helps owners tailor training to fit the dog’s unique personality. This approach leads to dogs that are happy, confident, and eager to please, whether their “job” is being a loyal service animal, a skilled protection partner, or a well-behaved family pet.

Bridging the Communication Gap

Clay emphasizes that most behavioral issues stem from a simple miscommunication. “The dog doesn’t speak English or French or German,” he says with a smile. It’s the owner’s responsibility to make expectations clear through patience, repetition, and reward. He sees his role as bridging that communication gap, helping owners understand their dogs and helping dogs understand what’s being asked of them. It’s a skill that has earned him high praise, with clients crediting him for creating harmony in their homes.

A Family Affair and a Community Hub

Elrod’s Working Dogs is a family business, with Clay, his wife Nicole, and their daughter, Hunter, all involved in the day-to-day operations. Their passion extends beyond their own clients. They host a Friday night clinic, creating a space for dog owners to work on obedience and protection training in a supportive group setting. More than just training, it’s a social gathering that provides vital mental and physical stimulation for the dogs and fosters friendship among their owners.

The Elrod family’s commitment is summed up in their simple but powerful tagline: “You can’t blame them if you don’t train them.” It’s a reminder that with a little guidance, patience, and a lot of love, every dog has the potential to be a wonderful companion.
