A Family’s Journey Through Chess and Life - Meet the Authors of Raising Chess Knight

From Dinner Table Conversations to a Published Book

In the heart of Canton, Michigan, a story of passion, purpose, and parenting has taken shape on the pages of a new book. Raising Chess Knight: Lessons from the Board to Everyday Life (From Brothers to Chess Champions: The Mindset and Methods behind Their Success – and Yours) is the collaborative work of Mohana Mukherjee Das and her teenage sons, Dron Acharya Das and Druheen Acharya Das. More than a book about chess, it is a heartfelt narrative of resilience, discipline, and discovery.

What began as a dinner table reflection evolved into a family-authored journey, blending personal anecdotes with life lessons. Mohana, a local resident for nearly a decade, explains, “We never had a book like this when we started our journey. There are thousands of books on how to play chess, but this is about what chess teaches us beyond the game.”

The idea took shape during a simple yet eye-opening moment: watching a parent overshadow a child’s joy during a chess lesson. It sparked a conversation about the pressures young players face and how adults can often miss the emotional nuances of their children’s experiences. That evening, a spark was lit, and soon the family began outlining a book that would give voice to those overlooked moments.

Raising Chess Knight doesn’t aim to teach chess tactics. Instead, it explores the emotional and psychological landscape of competitive play. Each chapter stands on its own, yet collectively, they tell a story about parenting, growth, and perspective. The book is written in a casual, conversational style, making it accessible to all readers—even those unfamiliar with chess.

Championing Youth and Community in Canton

Dron and Druheen, both competitive chess players who have represented Michigan at national levels, bring the authenticity of lived experience. Their insights into strategy, loss, motivation, and balance are shaped by years of play. Together, with their mother’s perspective, they crafted a narrative that not only reflects their own story but resonates with anyone who has ever supported a young athlete or artist.

Chess became the Mukherjee family’s thread—binding them together through long nights of tournaments, volunteer teaching in their community, and quiet reflections on what it all meant. Mohana shares, “This was a family project. We sat for hours recalling our past, writing, and reflecting. Chess was our bond, and writing became an extension of that bond.”

Locally, the family is affectionately known as the “Chess Home.” Their sons have coached middle and high school teams to multiple state championships—a feat never before achieved in their district. The community has taken note, with local cable channels covering their contributions and impact.

Interestingly, both boys are also avid powerlifters, offering a balanced counterpoint to the mental intensity of chess. Mohana believes this combination—chess, powerlifting, and academics—creates a holistic framework for growth. “We talk about balance in the book. It’s not just about performing, but about finding your center,” she adds.

Looking Ahead: Books, Balance, and Bigger Dreams

With just a week since launch, Raising Chess Knight is already gaining traction, drawing positive reviews from educators, business leaders, and international chess professionals alike. The Kindle edition is available for free, ensuring accessibility to families, educators, and coaches.

The book is the first installment of a trilogy. Future editions will continue to explore the emotional and strategic growth of young players. In parallel, the family is working on a second series titled Parenting the Bold, which shifts the lens to parenting from the child’s perspective.

Mohana sums it up simply: “If there’s one message we want readers to take away, it’s that success isn’t just about medals or titles. It’s about understanding each other, learning together, and growing as a family.”
