For over three and a half years, Candice Fliedner-Cuellar and her husband, Alfredo, have been at the heart of a quiet revolution on Long Beach’s historic Second Street. Their business, ALF’s Body Art Studio, is more than just a tattoo shop—it’s a bright, welcoming space designed to make everyone feel at home. As co-owners, Candice and Alfredo have built a reputation for artistry, integrity, and a uniquely warm atmosphere that stands out in an industry often perceived as intimidating.

Candice, a Long Beach local born and raised in nearby Lakewood, always envisioned a place where art and community could thrive side by side. When she and Alfredo decided to open their studio, they knew they wanted to break the mold. “We’re not a traditional tattoo parlor,” Candice explains. “We’re a body art studio.” The distinction is intentional. From tattoos and piercings to permanent makeup and henna, ALF’s offers a full spectrum of body adornment services in an environment that feels more like an art gallery than a basement shop.

What truly sets ALF’s apart is its commitment to inclusivity and comfort. The studio is bright, spacious, and filled with vibrant artwork—a deliberate contrast to the dim, loud spaces many associate with tattooing. “When people walk in, especially women, you can see them relax,” Candice says. “They feel safe here.” That sense of safety is no accident. With a team of seven talented artists, ALF’s has become a magnet for clients who value professionalism, creativity, and a judgment-free environment.

A Master Artist and a Talented Crew

The artistic talent at ALF’s is both deep and diverse, offering clients an incredible range of styles.

Leading the team is Alfredo himself, a seasoned professional with 15 years of experience in tattooing and piercing. He brings a master’s touch to the studio, specializing in vibrant, large-scale color pieces. His particular passion lies in Japanese-themed art, illustrative designs, and cartoon or anime-inspired tattoos, though his skill is so versatile he excels in virtually every style a client could desire.

The studio’s unique character is further defined by its team of dedicated artists, each with their own distinct specialty. Courtney specializes in precision, focusing on intricate geometric patterns and sophisticated dotwork tattoos. Erinn, who began as Alfredo’s apprentice and is now a Level 1 tattoo artist, has developed a signature style of fine-line tattoos with high contrast, blending whimsical and macabre themes into her captivating designs.

Bone brings a powerful, edgy energy to the studio with her focus on traditional American tattoos, often infused with a rock-and-punk twist. She also excels in Meso-American inspired art and innovative patchwork or embroidery-style tattoos, bringing four years of professional experience to her craft.

Beyond traditional tattoos, ALF’s is a destination for premier permanent cosmetics. Janette, the scalp micropigmentation artist, is a true veteran with an astounding 30 years of experience in the field. Cynthia, the studio’s brow specialist, has been perfecting lips and eyebrows with permanent makeup for eight years within the local community. Completing the team is Breanna, a talented and promising brow artist who has been building her skills in the business for the past couple of years.

This collective expertise ensures that every client finds the perfect artist to bring their vision to life, whether it’s a delicate fine-line design, a bold traditional piece, or life-enhancing permanent makeup.

Family is at the core of ALF’s story. The business was born out of necessity when Candice and Alfredo realized their son, who is autistic, would need dedicated care. By combining Alfredo’s artistic talent with Candice’s background in business development and grant writing, they created a venture that allows them to support their family while contributing to the community they love. Candice now balances managing the studio’s operations with homeschooling their son—a testament to their commitment to both business and family.

ALF’s impact extends beyond its doors. The studio has played a key role in revitalizing Second Street post-pandemic, championing local art and culture through initiatives like the neighborhood’s first-ever art walk. Candice, who is deeply involved with the Long Beach Visitors Bureau and local business associations, has worked tirelessly to bring more artistic energy to the area. “I wanted to be part of the renaissance of Second Street,” she says. “It’s a place I’ve loved my whole life.”

The studio also gives back through toy drives, beach cleanups, and discounts for military personnel, first responders, and teachers. Cross-promotions with neighboring businesses—like “Tiny Tattoo Tuesdays” paired with local taco specials—foster a spirit of collaboration that strengthens the local economy.

Looking ahead, Candice and Alfredo are excited to celebrate their four-year anniversary in June with a special event, hoping to recreate the success of their grand opening, which drew lines down the block. With their business growing and their son thriving, the future is bright for this entrepreneurial duo.

ALF’s Body Art Studio is more than a business—it’s a reflection of Candice and Alfredo’s values: artistry, community, and kindness. Whether you’re a tattoo enthusiast or a first-timer, you’ll find a place where you belong, served by some of the most skilled and diverse artists in Southern California.
