Bringing Happy Hour to the Mall: How Tapville is Revitalizing Shopping in Columbia

By Lola Beth on August 20, 2024

Columbia, MD – What comes to mind when you think of a shopping mall? For many, it’s bustling corridors and arms laden with shopping bags. But at The Mall in Columbia, there’s a new attraction drawing crowds and unexpectedly fostering community: Tapville, a self-pour bar right in the heart of the mall.

Meet Chandra Goodman, co-owner of the local Tapville franchise and half of the dynamic duo behind bringing this innovative concept to Columbia. Along with her business partner and lifelong friend, Katrina Greene, Chandra is on a mission to “Make Malls Great Again” by offering a unique space for relaxation, connection, and responsible enjoyment.

The journey to Tapville began during the pandemic, when Chandra, then a teacher, and her friends started hosting informal happy hours in the school parking lot. These gatherings sparked an idea: Why not turn this into a business? Initially considering a mobile drink truck, Chandra’s research led her to Tapville, a franchise offering mobile and mall-based options.

“When we visited their office in Chicago, they showed us the concept of a bar in the middle of the mall, and we thought it was brilliant,” Chandra recalls. The idea resonated deeply with both women, who grew up frequenting malls together. While Chandra always loved the mall experience, Katrina could have been more enthusiastic about shopping. “Katrina said if this was around when we were in our early 20s, she would have never left the mall,” Chandra laughs.

Tapville, which opened in February 2024, offers a diverse selection of local craft beers, wines, and signature cocktails. Its self-pour technology sets it apart, allowing customers to sample different beverages in various portion sizes. “It’s all about exploration and finding what you like,” Chandra explains.

But Tapville is more than just a bar. It’s a space designed for connection. With board games, a large TV for sports viewing, and ample seating, it encourages patrons to linger, chat, and unwind. “We’ve created an atmosphere where people can have meaningful conversations, play games, and enjoy each other’s company,” Chandra says proudly.

The journey to opening Tapville had its challenges. It took nearly three years of planning, securing finances, and navigating regulations. But Chandra and Katrina’s determination and winning the Partners to Empower grant from Brookfield Properties helped turn their vision into reality.

Bringing Happy Hour to the Mall

What truly sets Tapville apart is its commitment to fostering a culture of responsible enjoyment. “We’re creating an environment where people can see that it’s possible to enjoy alcohol in a public setting without excess,” Chandra explains. “It’s about building healthy relationships with alcohol and with each other.”

This philosophy extends to families as well. Tapville offers non-alcoholic options and even hosts family-friendly events. “We want to show that you can have a space where adults can enjoy a drink while kids are welcome too,” Chandra says.

The community response has been overwhelmingly positive. “Every week, we see an increase in sales and foot traffic,” Chandra beams. “People are genuinely excited to have us here.”

Looking to the future, Chandra and Katrina have big plans. They’re joining the Howard County Chamber of Commerce and partnering with other local businesses to host networking events and entrepreneurship workshops. “We want to give back to the community that’s embraced us so warmly,” Chandra explains.

So, the next time you find yourself at The Mall in Columbia, why take a break from shopping and stop by Tapville? Whether you’re looking to try a new craft beer, engage in a friendly competition over a board game, or simply unwind after a long day of retail therapy, you’ll find a warm welcome and a sense of community that’s bringing new life to the mall experience.

As Chandra likes to say, “Grab your tribe and vibe!” At Tapville, everyone’s invited to raise a glass to good company and great times.
