Bringing the Lab to You: How Smooth Stick Mobile Labs Is Changing Blood Draws in Fort Worth

For most people, getting bloodwork done means the same tired routine: driving to a lab, signing in, and settling into a waiting room chair for an hour or more before a stranger finally calls your name. For homebound patients, busy professionals, and families raising children with sensory sensitivities, that routine can be more than an inconvenience. It can be a genuine barrier to getting the care they need.

Belinda Russell has spent the last 20 years watching that barrier play out in hospitals, doctor’s offices, and diagnostic centers across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. As a certified phlebotomist and medical assistant, she saw patients skip appointments, delay prescriptions, and go without labs simply because the process of getting there was too hard. Earlier this year, she decided to do something about it and launched Smooth Stick Mobile Labs, a mobile phlebotomy service that brings the blood draw directly to the patient, wherever they happen to be.

A Business Born from Personal Experience

Smooth Stick Mobile Labs did not start as a business plan. It started as a solution to a problem Belinda lived with every day. Her son is autistic, and like many families navigating sensory challenges, she found that a trip to a traditional lab could turn into a stressful ordeal for the whole family. Crowded waiting rooms, unfamiliar noises, and long waits before an unfamiliar face draws blood are a lot to ask of a child who does much better in a calm, familiar environment.

At the same time, Belinda kept encountering homebound and elderly patients who simply could not make it to a lab at all. Illness, mobility limits, or the sheer physical toll of getting dressed and driven somewhere for a routine blood draw meant that important labs were being missed, and with them, the prescriptions and treatment decisions that depend on them.

Those two realities, her son’s needs and her patients’ struggles, pointed to the same solution. If people could not easily come to the lab, the lab needed to come to them.

What Smooth Stick Mobile Labs Offers

Smooth Stick Mobile Labs serves the greater Fort Worth area, with visits extending into Dallas as needed. The service is built around a simple idea: patients get their labs drawn wherever they are most comfortable, whether that is their own living room, a busy office during a lunch break, or a facility that supports drug testing and DOT compliance.

The people who benefit most tend to fall into a few groups. Homebound and elderly patients avoid the physical strain of a lab visit altogether. Patients on the autism spectrum, including children like Belinda’s own son, can get their blood drawn in a familiar setting without the sensory overload of a clinical waiting room. And busy professionals who simply do not have an hour and a half to spare can get labs done on their own schedule, without sitting in line.

Booking is simple. Patients can call, or if they would rather skip the phone call altogether, they can text to schedule an appointment. That flexibility reflects something Belinda has learned over two decades in the field: healthcare should adapt to the patient, not the other way around.

Beyond routine blood draws, Belinda also performs therapeutic draws for patients managing certain blood disorders, offers DNA collection (a certification she is currently completing), and supports drug testing for individuals and workplaces. She also teaches phlebotomy to students on mornings and weekends, passing along the skills she has built over 20 years in the field to the next generation of phlebotomists.

Why the Name “Smooth Stick”

The name carries a bit of personal history and a healthy sense of humor. Over the years, patients have told Belinda again and again how gentle and precise her technique is, often using the exact words that inspired the company name. She is quick to admit she was not always that good. Like anyone learning a skill, her early draws were far from perfect. But after 20 years of practice, “smooth stick” became more than a compliment. It became a fitting, approachable way to describe a service that so many people associate with anxiety and discomfort.

That approachability matters. Most people do not think fondly of needles, and a name like “phlebotomy” or “lab draw” tends to conjure exactly the image most patients want to avoid. Smooth Stick Mobile Labs was named to put people at ease before they even book an appointment.

Rooted in the Fort Worth Community

Belinda was born and raised in Fort Worth, and although she spent time away as a young adult, she came back and has stayed ever since. Family and community are the reasons she gives for putting down roots there, and that connection shows up in how she runs her business.

Rather than sending out rotating staff the way larger corporate services often do, Belinda focuses on consistency. Patients who prefer a particular phlebotomist can request that same person for future visits, which builds trust over time, especially for patients who feel anxious about new providers learning their veins from scratch. For families managing complex health needs or children with sensory sensitivities, that familiarity can make all the difference between a stressful appointment and a smooth one.

Belinda also makes a point of keeping care accessible. Smooth Stick Mobile Labs offers discounts for veterans and seniors, and Belinda works with patients going through difficult financial stretches to make sure cost does not stand between someone and the bloodwork they need for their medication and treatment plans.

Outside of the business, Belinda is active in a local networking group that connects business owners across a range of industries, and she has volunteered with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and local cancer fundraising events over the years.

Life Beyond the Business

When she is not out drawing labs, Belinda spends much of her time in her garden, growing squash, cantaloupe, watermelon, peas, green beans, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. She often shares the harvest with neighbors and friends. Gardening, she says, is where she finds calm and clarity, a quiet contrast to the busy schedule of running a mobile healthcare business.

Family plays a central role in her life as well. Belinda has been married for eight years, and together she and her husband are raising three children, including a youngest child he adopted after they married. She describes meeting her husband as one of the most significant turning points in her life, one that shifted her outlook and, in her words, made her a kinder person.

Looking Ahead

Belinda’s vision for Smooth Stick Mobile Labs over the next several years centers on community. She hopes to grow deep roots in Fort Worth, create local jobs, and build a business that supports the neighborhoods she grew up in. She is also passionate about mentoring younger women, giving them a foundation of skills and independence to build their own paths, much like the one she built for herself over 20 years in healthcare.

What started as a way to make life easier for her own son has grown into a service that is changing how an entire community experiences something as routine, and as important, as a simple blood draw.
