Hector Perdomo, a passionate advocate for basketball and youth development, has dedicated his life to carrying forward the legacy of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, through his grandson’s foundation. As the driving force behind the Naismith International Basketball Foundation, Hector aims to use the game as a tool for education, community development, and personal growth.
Born in Puerto Rico and raised in the boroughs of Boston, Hector’s journey has been a testament to resilience and determination. Growing up in challenging circumstances, he found solace and purpose on the basketball court. “Basketball saved my life many times over!” he recalls. From those early days, Hector’s love for the game grew into a mission to help others find hope and opportunity through sports. “Only the creator could have placed me here. The first time I saw a basketball, I didn’t even know what it was. I moved to Chelsea when I was 12 years old, and that very first week, I saw my neighbor come downstairs and start walking down the street while bouncing the ball between his legs, known as walking the ball. I instantly fell in love! The rest is history.”
Hector’s connection to the Naismith family began serendipitously in 1999 when he met Ian Naismith, the grandson of Dr. James Naismith. This meeting sparked a lifelong friendship and partnership that allowed Hector to play a pivotal role in preserving Dr. Naismith’s vision and purpose. Despite numerous challenges, including periods of homelessness and personal loss, Hector’s unwavering commitment to the foundation has kept its mission alive.
“The foundation isn’t about me,” Hector emphasizes. “It’s about continuing what Dr. Naismith started—using basketball as a tool for education and character building.” Through scholarships, mentorship programs, and community events, the foundation promotes good sportsmanship, mental health awareness, and opportunities for youth development from the very family who invented the game.
One of Hector’s primary goals is to reach at-risk youth in detention centers, providing them with hope and skills for a brighter future. The Naismith Good Sportsmanship Tour #2025 #REDUCE #RECIDIVISM. “These kids need options,” Hector explains. “Whether it’s learning to fly drones, becoming an electrician, or pursuing higher education, we want to give them the tools to succeed.”
Hector’s innovative initiatives include the “Naismith’s Esports Extravaganza©,” a program designed to merge technology and sports, creating new opportunities for youth engagement. Despite setbacks, including resistance from major organizations, Hector remains optimistic. “Good always wins in the end,” he says with conviction.
Under Hector’s leadership, the Naismith International Basketball Foundation continues to be the beacon of hope for countless individuals who were good friends of and loved Mr. Ian Naismith and his beautiful wife, Renee DiGuilo Naismith, and his amazing drive to protect his grandfather’s baby—BASKETBALL. Through partnerships, community events, and educational programs, the foundation continues to make a meaningful impact. Hector’s dream is to see the foundation surpass traditional sports organizations in its reach and influence. “Basketball is more than a game,” Hector says. “It’s a way to bring people together, to teach values, and to inspire greatness.”
Hector’s journey is far from over. With plans to produce a documentary about his life titled The Legacy Keeper©, he hopes to inspire a broader audience to join the mission. Through his life story, Hector wants to show the transformative power of basketball and the importance of perservering and never giving up on what makes your heart pump and blood flow, and to continue to preserve basketball’s rich heritage by being an example of the decisions you make every day. The decisions you make today will shape your future tomorrow!
“Strong in body, clean in mind, and lofty in ideals,” always give you a fair chance at a better life!
