In the heart of Northern California’s spirited culture, Douglas Smith and the Whisky Education Foundation are redefining what it means to enjoy whiskey—with a mission that’s as enriching as it is enjoyable. Far from a simple tasting club, The Whisky Education Foundation is a movement dedicated to fostering appreciation, knowledge, and responsible enjoyment of whiskey, while supporting the hospitality industry and nurturing the next generation of spirits aficionados.
Douglas Smith is not your typical whiskey enthusiast. With a background in electrical engineering, he brings a unique perspective to the world of distilled spirits—one rooted in curiosity, precision, and a deep appreciation for both science and art. “I’m fascinated by the chemistry and physics behind whiskey making,” Smith explains in a recent interview. “It’s the science that acts as the artist’s paintbrush, creating endless variations of liquid art.” This blend of technical expertise and creative passion is at the core of Whisky EDU’s philosophy.
Smith’s journey into whiskey began as a hobby, but quickly grew into something much larger. Over the past decade, he has produced whiskey festivals across the United States, most notably taking Whiskies of the World from a single event in San Francisco to a celebrated series spanning six major cities. In 2015, he launched an annual whiskey judging competition, further cementing his reputation as a leader in the industry.
At its heart, the Whisky Education Foundation is about education, community, and responsible enjoyment. The organization is built on three core pillars:
The Whisky Education Foundation’s offerings are as diverse as the spirits they celebrate. The organization hosts both in-person and virtual whiskey tastings, tailored to suit private parties, corporate events, and everything in between. In the San Francisco Bay Area, their events are renowned for their immersive, sensory-rich experiences—think guided tastings, masterclasses, and food pairings led by some of the industry’s most respected experts.
For those who can’t make it in person, virtual tastings bring the whiskey world to your living room. Participants receive carefully curated tasting kits and join expert-led sessions via Zoom, making it easy to explore new flavors and learn from anywhere in the country.
The Whisky Education Foundation’s team is a veritable dream team of whiskey aficionados. Among them is Ted Sloniker, a passionate collector and educator whose travels through Ireland and Scotland have deepened his love for the spirit. Then there’s his mentor, Steve Beal, a globally recognized whiskey expert and international spirits judge, whose accolades include induction into the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame and the Keepers of the Quaich.
Together, these experts create engaging, informative experiences that are as much about storytelling as they are about sipping. “We want people to appreciate not just the taste, but the history, the craft, and the people behind every bottle,” Smith says.
One of the Whisky Education Foundation’s standout offerings is “The Art of Whiskey,” an annual event held during Super Bowl week that brings together whiskey lovers, industry leaders, and celebrities for an unforgettable celebration. Guests enjoy premium tastings, cigar pairings, live jazz, and gourmet food, all while networking with some of the most influential figures in business, sports, and entertainment.
The event is a microcosm of the Whisky Education Foundation’s broader mission: to create spaces where people can connect, learn, and celebrate the art of whiskey in all its forms.
The Whisky Education Foundation was also the sponsor charity behind the Whiskies of the World Awards, an annual competition that showcased the best whiskies from around the globe. The awards were judged by a panel of industry professionals and enthusiasts, and served as both a celebration of excellence and a valuable resource for whiskey lovers seeking new favorites.
Beyond awards, The Whisky Education Foundation is committed to ongoing education. Their monthly study groups, tasting kits, and online resources make it easy for anyone to deepen their whiskey knowledge, whether they’re just starting out or looking to refine their palate25.
Douglas Smith and The Whisky Education Foundation team are just getting started. With plans to expand their educational offerings, grow their community, and continue supporting the hospitality industry, they are poised to shape the future of whiskey appreciation for years to come.
“Our goal is to create experiences that are as enriching as they are enjoyable,” Smith says. “We want to inspire people to explore, learn, and connect—one dram at a time.”
