A beacon of hope and transformation lies in the bustling town of Matteson, IL, nestled at 21141 Governors Highway— Howard Intervention Center for Autism.
Cara Wilson founded this center as a sanctuary for children with autism and developmental challenges. Cara’s passion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to making a difference have driven her to create an environment where children can thrive.
Cara Wilson, a seasoned speech therapist with over 25 years of experience, was propelled into the world of autism intervention when her son was diagnosed with autism. “When my son was diagnosed, I knew immediately that he needed ABA therapy,” Cara recalls. She had witnessed the profound impact of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy on children she worked with and was determined to provide the same for her son. This personal journey ignited her mission to establish the Howard Intervention Center.
The Howard Intervention Center offers ABA and developmental therapy tailored to each child’s needs. The center’s structured environment ensures that children receive one-on-one treatment, focusing on skill acquisition, language development, and behavior shaping. “Our programs are individualized based on each child’s goals,” Cara explains. “We aim to make life-changing progress, whether teaching a child to sit still for instruction, potty training, or extinguishing disruptive behaviors.”
Cara’s dedication to her work is deeply rooted in her personal experiences. “I built this center out of love for my son,” she shares. Every aspect of the center reflects her commitment to providing the best for all children, mirroring what she sought for her child. This heartfelt approach sets the Howard Intervention Center apart, ensuring that families receive the utmost care and attention.
Cara’s journey has not been without its challenges. In July 2021, Cara faced an unimaginable tragedy when police killed her 19-year-old daughter. This devastating loss took a toll on Cara, leading her to retreat and grapple with grief. “I was in a closed bedroom for two years, trying to recover,” she reveals. Despite this profound pain, Cara’s resilience shone through. She gradually began rebuilding her life and business, driven by a desire to honor her daughter’s memory.
In addition to her work at the center, Cara engages in various initiatives to support other mothers who have faced similar tragedies. She sends out gift boxes filled with self-care items to mothers who have lost children to police violence. These boxes include bath bombs, candles, fuzzy socks, and other comforting items, offering a small respite from their grief. “I want to provide a moment of relaxation and self-care,” Cara explains. She has also established programs to help young women pursue certifications in beauty services, continuing her daughter’s legacy.
The Howard Intervention Center stands out not only for its comprehensive services but also for its commitment to continuous improvement. Cara is working towards becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), a qualification that will allow her to take on the top clinical position in her company. “Once I’m qualified, it will significantly reduce our costs and allow us to reinvest in the center,” she notes.
Cara has been an integral part of the Matteson community for over 21 years, contributing to local schools as a speech therapist and exceptional education professional. Her involvement in the community has fostered strong relationships and a deep understanding of the needs of local families. The Howard Intervention Center is a local Chamber of Commerce member, reflecting its commitment to being an active and supportive community partner.
Despite the setbacks and challenges, Cara remains optimistic about the future of the Howard Intervention Center. With a dedicated team, a growing client base, and a supportive community, she is determined to continue positively impacting the lives of children and their families. “This life-altering event has made me stronger,” Cara affirms. “I built this company because I loved my son, and I will continue to do my best for every child who walks through our doors.”
