In the heart of Dayton, Ohio, Seamus Martin and his partner William have been redefining the boundaries of art and craftsmanship for over a decade. As the proud owners of a unique handmade jewelry and altar supply business, they specialize in creating eclectic and steampunk-inspired pieces that captivate and connect with their diverse clientele.
Crafting a Legacy Through Electroforming
Seamus’s business revolves around the fascinating process of electroforming. “It’s essentially copper-plating organic or inorganic objects,” explains Seamus. “We use a rectifier, copper sulfate baths, and conductive paint to transform objects like crystals, bones, and even octopus tentacles into wearable art or altar items.” Seamus’s passion for chemistry and creative innovation is evident in every piece. He combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to produce items like crystal pendants, copper-plated animal bones, and custom jewelry with a mystical, earthy charm.
Seamus credits years of passion in chemistry as instrumental to his success in mastering electroforming. “I saw another artist’s work on Instagram about seven years ago, and I was inspired to dive into the process myself,” he says.
A Community-Focused Business
The business has grown steadily, with their products now available in ten local brick-and-mortar stores and through an online platform. Seamus and William also regularly attend conventions, expos, and local festivals to showcase their work. From the bustling expos to the charming Yellow Springs Street Fair, their booth is a fan favorite for its eclectic mix of jewelry and altar pieces.
Seamus emphasizes their deep connection to the Dayton community. “I love how people here come together in times of need,” he shares. “It’s inspiring to see neighbors helping each other, whether it’s through community groups or local events.”
A Personal Mission of Inclusivity
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Seamus is committed to fostering inclusivity. The business regularly participates in Pride festivals, and Seamus openly shares his journey as a transgender individual. “We give back by supporting community events and being visible representatives of our values,” he says.
What Sets Them Apart
Their artistry stands out not just for its craftsmanship but also for its customizability. Seamus has created memorable pieces like jade and copper rings for vow renewals and tree-of-life wall hangings with amethyst and moldavite. “Our use of electroforming to incorporate natural elements makes every piece unique,” he explains.
Looking Ahead
Seamus and William aim to expand their presence at conventions and fairs, with plans to attend one or two events every month in the coming year. They also hope to encourage more customer engagement through online reviews and social media.
Whether it’s their steampunk-inspired crystal jewelry, custom altar items, or community spirit, Seamus and William are building more than a business—they’re creating a legacy of art, connection, and inclusivity in Dayton and beyond.
