James Williamson, the owner of Blue Moon Ballroom, is a passionate dance instructor with 39 years of experience in teaching dance. Blue Moon Ballroom, located in Columbia, SC, provides personalized dance lessons for individuals and couples looking to gain confidence on the dance floor. James created the name “Blue Moon Ballroom” inspired by the popular song in the dance world, a favorite beer, and the elegant sound it evokes.

At Blue Moon Ballroom, we teach people how to dance, whether it’s preparing for a special event, like a wedding, or just for fun. We help our clients build confidence through personalized lessons designed to meet their individual needs. Whether you’re an empty-nester looking to meet new people or a couple preparing for your wedding dance, Blue Moon Ballroom is here to guide you on your dance journey.
We serve both Richland and Lexington counties and cater to a diverse range of clients—from couples needing a wedding dance choreographed, to retirees looking for a fun and social activity.
What sets Blue Moon Ballroom apart from other dance studios is James’s commitment to providing personal attention to each student. He listens carefully to their needs and tailors each lesson to meet those expectations. His goal is to help his students learn what they want, not just what he thinks they need. This personalized approach has helped him build lasting relationships with his clients.
James’s own journey into dance started in 1986 when, without knowing how to dance, he answered an ad for a dance teacher trainee position. That moment led to a career that has spanned over three decades. Through teaching, James gained confidence and found his true calling. He loves being able to share this passion with others and help them discover the joy of dance.
Located in Columbia, James has made this vibrant city his home for the past 12 years. He values the city’s diversity and harmonious mix of cultures. His favorite part of living in Columbia is how the community embraces diversity and promotes goodwill through the use of armed forces.
James believes in giving back to the community. Blue Moon Ballroom offers a 10% discount for college students, first responders, and military personnel. James also supports various local charities by donating dance lessons to events such as the Heart Association’s auctions, Auntie Carol Fundraiser for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the Children’s Home event.
Blue Moon Ballroom is growing, and James is excited about the future. His aim is to make each lesson fun, interesting, and easy to follow, ensuring that his students not only learn but truly enjoy their time on the dance floor.
James invites anyone interested in learning to dance to come to Blue Moon Ballroom for a lesson. His job is to make the process enjoyable and stress-free. As James says, “Everyone deserves a chance to dance. Life is better on the dance floor.”
Whether you’re a beginner or looking to perfect your moves, Blue Moon Ballroom is ready to help you take that first step towards becoming a confident dancer.
