Jacksonville, AR – In the heart of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Burton Barber College offers opportunity and community to future barbers. Founded by Lovail Wilson, a veteran and seasoned barber with over three decades of experience, this institution is not just about imparting skills but about transforming lives.

As the first and only barber college in Jacksonville, the school offers comprehensive programs that prepare students for the State Board Exam and a successful career in barbering. The college’s offerings include a 1,500-hour barbering program, a 600-hour instructor program, and a 600-hour cosmetology crossover program for licensed cosmetologists.
A Legacy of Learning

Lovail Wilson’s journey into barbering began somewhat reluctantly. “My mother, who was a barber stylist, signed me up for barber school right after high school. I had no intention of going; I thought I would design clothes for a living,” Lovail recalls.
But her mother’s decision turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Over time, Lovail discovered a passion for the craft and realized its enduring value. “It’s something that nobody can take away from you, and you can always use it. Even when I joined the military, I could make extra money by cutting hair,” she shares. This realization of the trade’s value and versatility fuels Lovail’s mission at Burton Barber College.
A Heart for Community
Lovail’s commitment to her students goes beyond mere instruction. She often provides scholarships and tuition assistance, driven by a desire to help everyone access education. “I wear my heart on my sleeve and want to help everybody. I think everyone should have a trade, a skill that they can always fall back on,” she says. Her generosity is rooted in a deep belief in the transformative power of education and the opportunities it can create.
This ethos of giving back extends to the broader community as well. Burton Barber College regularly opens its doors for free haircut events, providing services to those in need and giving students hands-on experience. “We get all kinds of people coming in off the street, and we try not to turn anyone away,” Lovail notes. These events are just one way the college integrates community service into its educational model.
Challenges and Resilience
The path to establishing Burton Barber College has not been without its hurdles. Lovail’s current location is her third attempt, following a devastating tornado that destroyed her previous school just months after it opened. “It was hard and very hurtful, but I couldn’t give up. I had too many people depending on me,” Lovail remembers. Her resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to her dedication to her mission and her students.
A Personal Touch in Education
Lovail believes that what sets Burton Barber College apart is her hands-on approach and personal investment in her students’ success. “It’s not just about the hands-on skills; it’s about how you treat others, making them feel welcome and valued,” she explains.
The college places a strong emphasis on professionalism, business ethics, and customer service, ensuring that graduates are not only skilled barbers but also
well-rounded professionals. This holistic approach is evident in the way Lovail interacts with her students and the broader community.
Her twin daughters help with the school’s cleaning and administrative tasks, making it a true family affair. This personal touch fosters a supportive and nurturing environment where students can thrive.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Lovail plans to increase the school’s visibility and reach. “We need more exposure. Social media ads haven’t been very effective, so we’re focusing on word-of-mouth and community engagement,” she says. Despite the challenges, Lovail remains optimistic about the future of Burton Barber College and its role in the community.
Her message to potential students is simple: “Our tuition is very affordable, and we work with you on down payments. We have a lot of knowledge and expertise in this industry and genuinely care about teaching you a trade that can improve your quality of life.”
For Lovail Wilson, Burton Barber College is more than a business; it’s a lifelong commitment to education, community, and resilience. Her story is one of perseverance, generosity, and an unwavering belief in the power of skill and knowledge.
