The Man Behind the Mission

Jay Michaels has always understood the struggle of independent artists. Before he became the founder and executive director of Jay Michaels Global Communications (JMGC), he was one of them—writing, directing, and producing his own work while navigating the uphill battle of visibility. His journey from passionate artist to strategic communications expert is what makes him uniquely positioned to help independent creatives find their audience.

“I know what it’s like to have something powerful to share and feel like no one is listening,” Jay explains. “That’s why I started this company—to give independent artists the attention they deserve.”

More Than Public Relations—It’s Visibility

Unlike traditional PR firms that focus on big-budget productions and established names, JMGC is dedicated to visibility for the underrepresented. Jay doesn’t just push out press releases; he actively builds relationships between his clients and media outlets, podcasters, bloggers, and festival organizers.

“If I take on a client, it’s because I believe in their story. I don’t just promote projects—I advocate for them.”

A Global Reach with a Personal Touch

What started as a small venture working with New York-based theater companies has since expanded to a global network. JMGC has helped independent playwrights, filmmakers, and artists gain recognition from News York to Italy to Australia to India. Yet, despite this expansion, Jay remains hands-on, ensuring that every artist he works with gets personalized guidance and real opportunities.

“My clients don’t just get PR services. They get someone who genuinely cares about their success.”

The Mission: Elevating Important Stories

Jay is drawn to artists who have a mission-driven message. Whether it’s a play about LGBTQ+ history, a film exploring immigration, or a music project addressing social justice, he believes in amplifying voices that need to be heard.

“If someone comes to me and says, ‘I just want to make a lot of money off this project,’ I’m probably not the right fit,” he laughs. “But if they say, ‘I need the world to hear this story,’ then I’m all in.”

Lessons from a Lifetime in the Industry

With over 40 years of experience, Jay has had his share of pivotal moments. One that stands out is the time he was thrown into a project at the New York Daily News. He had no idea where he was being sent—until he found himself backstage at Carnegie Hall, handing Bob Hope his introductory script. That experience solidified his belief that great opportunities come when you push past uncertainty and say yes.

Another lesson? You have to go the extra mile. “I once worked with an opera company whose previous PR rep just ‘sent out the press release’ and called it a day. That’s not enough. You follow up. You push. You make sure people pay attention.”

A Team Built on Passion

JMGC isn’t a one-man operation. Jay has built a team of talented writers, reviewers, and press associates who share his passion for independent art. Many of them started as freelancers, but their dedication and expertise have made them key players in giving visibility to incredible, often-overlooked work.

Supporting Artists Beyond Business

Jay doesn’t just offer services—he offers mentorship, discounts, and even free advice to struggling artists. If he believes in a project but knows the artist can’t afford his services, he finds a way to help anyway.

“It’s not always about making a profit. It’s about making sure great art doesn’t get ignored.”

A Legacy of Storytelling

Jay’s work is fueled by his deep love for storytelling. From his childhood spent collecting comic books and watching sci-fi to his lifelong career in theater and film, he’s always believed in the power of stories to change the world.

And if there’s one thing he wants every independent artist to remember, it’s this: “History is not written by the winners—it’s written by their press agents.”
