Boise, Idaho – In 2002, Brian Hoyt was down on his luck. He was unemployed with only uncertainty and determination to his name. What did he do? Brian started asking if he could clean windows and not long after, Poor Man Window Cleaning was born. Brian and his small team have been hard at work showing the greater Boise area what an awesome window cleaner looks like since.
While window cleaning is how the company got its start, from Brian’s point of view, the service he and his team provide is giving time back to his clients. “We want to give people their weekends back,” Brian said. “We’re not just selling cleaning or services; we’re giving you your time back.”
With over 20 years of serving the local community, Brian has had some interesting interactions with those he refers to as “the Poor Man family.” This has included regularly watching Hot Rod TV with a client and becoming a part of their memories. During the height of the pandemic in 2020, Brian was surprised to find a bulk-sized package of toilet paper in the cab of his truck after providing a contact-free exterior window cleaning.
Brian attributes the success Poor Man has seen to the deep connection he makes with the Poor Man family. That connection is built through a friendly, non-corporate approach that lets personalities come through. Some of Brian’s clients have been a part of the family for 20 years.
“We’re looking at it as you inviting us into your lives,” Brian explained.
Another passion of Brian’s is giving back to the local communities that have given him and his business such overwhelming support. Charities Brian supports are Camp Rainbow Gold (@camprainbowgold on Instagram), the Wassmuth Center (@wassmuthcenter on Instagram), and, of course, he gives back to his school, the Whittier Vikings.
Brian wants to pass on his knowledge, wisdom and business to the next generation. When we asked what key piece of wisdom Brian would like to pass on, he had this to say: “Everything is tolerable for about two to five minutes,” Brian said, “and you can reset your personality within that time. Your perspective of what is going on around you and how you react are the only things you can control. So, take those two to three minutes and put yourself back in control.”
