Some of life’s most meaningful journeys begin with unexpected moments. For Neci Harmon, owner of What’s She Creating Enterprises in College Park, Georgia, that moment came over two decades ago in her grandmother’s back sewing room. What started as a young girl’s determination to master a sewing machine has blossomed into a thriving business that empowers both children and adults to discover their creative potential.
The name “What’s She Creating Enterprises” itself tells a story of inspiration and encouragement. “I was just like in a daydream one day, and then I heard people cheering,” Neci recalls. “They were just yelling, ‘what’s she creating?’ And I was like, yay!” That moment of imaginative inspiration perfectly captures the spirit of excitement and possibility that defines her business today.
Located in the vibrant community of College Park, just outside Atlanta, What’s She Creating Enterprises has become a haven for aspiring sewists of all ages. The studio specializes in beginner sewing machine classes and alterations, offering a welcoming space where creativity flourishes and skills develop under expert guidance.

Neci’s path to entrepreneurship began in Roanoke, Virginia, where her passion for fashion and design first took root. She pursued her dreams by earning a B.S. in Fashion Merchandising and Design from North Carolina A & T State University, receiving the formal education that would become the foundation of her expertise. After graduation, Atlanta called to her with its vibrant creative community and abundant opportunities.
Atlanta became her home, offering the supportive environment that allowed her creative vision to thrive. “I just like the fact that there’s a lot of opportunity in Atlanta,” Neci explains. “You can kind of be what you want to be as long as you just network with the right people or put yourself out there. People support you if you do good work.”
With over 23 years of sewing experience, Neci’s journey into the world of fabric and thread began somewhat accidentally. When her grandmother wouldn’t let her go play at the park one day, young Neci wandered into the unused back sewing room. “I just started messing with the machine,” she remembers. Her mother taught her how to thread it, gave her a commercial pattern, and simply said, “just read it and figure it out.”
That moment of self-directed learning became the foundation of her teaching philosophy. Neci went on to study fashion merchandising and design, combining formal education with years of hands-on experience. She began creating custom bags and accessory items that she sold at retail, building a product-based business that operated successfully for several years.
In 2022, What’s She Creating Enterprises underwent a significant transformation. While the company had been operating since 2017 as a product-based business, Neci made the strategic decision to pivot toward sewing education and services. This shift allowed her to share her expertise more directly with her community and make a deeper impact on people’s lives.
What’s She Creating Enterprises serves a diverse clientele, with carefully structured classes that meet the unique needs of different age groups. Adult students, typically women between 25 and 50, come to the studio for various reasons. Some want to learn a creative skill they’ve always been curious about. Others seek “me time,” a chance to focus on themselves away from the demands of daily life. Many simply want to pick up a new hobby that combines practical skills with artistic expression.
For children, the path to Neci’s studio is often led by their own curiosity and creativity. “Usually the child either tells the parent that’s what they want to learn, or they’re already creating something or taping things together,” Neci notes. Parents recognize that spark of interest and seek out quality instruction to nurture it.
The studio separates adult and children’s classes to provide age-appropriate instruction. Kids enjoy focused hour to hour-and-a-half sessions, while adults benefit from more intensive two-hour classes. This structure ensures that everyone receives instruction tailored to their learning pace and goals.

In a world where many skills are taught through quick online tutorials, What’s She Creating Enterprises stands out through its commitment to detailed, clear, and concise education. “We are extremely detailed in what we do,” Neci emphasizes. “Our education is extremely clear and concise so that anyone can pick it up pretty easily.”
The studio combines the best of both worlds: hands-on, in-person instruction at the College Park location, complemented by digital tutorials on YouTube that students can reference at home. This hybrid approach ensures that learning continues beyond the classroom, giving students the resources they need to practice and grow their skills independently.
Neci holds both professional credentials and extensive real-world experience. She is certified as a six through twelve teacher in Georgia, meaning she’s qualified to teach in high school settings. Combined with her two degrees in fashion-related fields and 23 years of practical sewing experience, her qualifications speak to both her technical expertise and her ability to effectively communicate that knowledge to others.
Some of Neci’s most memorable experiences come from watching young students discover and develop their talents. She recounts the story of a four-year-old student who attended class with her nine-year-old sister. Sitting on her father’s lap at a table, the little girl threaded the needle and operated the sewing machine with remarkable ease. “I was like, oh my gosh, this girl’s like a prodigy,” Neci recalls with obvious delight.
Another standout student, a six-year-old, demonstrates skills that rival many adults. “She can cut like an adult. She can sew very, very well, and she does not go fast,” Neci explains. The young girl’s attention to detail and commitment to quality particularly impress her instructor. “If it’s not almost perfect, she was like, ‘why does this look like this?'” This level of self-awareness and dedication in such a young student speaks to the quality of instruction and the supportive environment Neci creates.
Understanding that financial barriers shouldn’t prevent anyone from learning valuable creative skills, What’s She Creating Enterprises offers a sewing scholarship program for both children and adults. Applicants simply fill out an application and submit either a two to three paragraph essay or a 90-second video explaining why they need the scholarship. Selected recipients can take three to five classes at no charge or at a partial rate, ensuring that economic circumstances don’t limit access to quality sewing education.
Neci’s business success stems largely from her deep connections within the Atlanta community. Her studio operates within Push Push Arts, an artist organization that provides space for creative entrepreneurs. She’s also an active member of Atlanta Sewing Style, a group of sewing enthusiasts who gather for social events and sew days, sharing their passion for the craft.
Beyond formal networking groups, Neci maintains an active presence in neighborhood groups on platforms like Nextdoor and Facebook. This grassroots approach to community engagement has proven highly effective. “I’ve gotten referrals from doctors and dentists and stuff like that, just from being in different community networking groups,” she notes.
Her business also benefits from strong word-of-mouth recommendations and five-star Google reviews. “People like, ‘yeah, I read the reviews and I was like, okay, yes, the reviews are doing it,'” Neci says, highlighting how satisfied customers become her best advocates.
While What’s She Creating Enterprises keeps her busy, Neci maintains a rich life outside her business. Married for 15 years to a supportive spouse, she’s also the proud parent of a nine-year-old who excels both academically and athletically. Her family enjoys spending quality time together, maintaining close bonds.
Neci’s personal interests include walking, gardening, and eating healthy. She enjoys playing sports rather than just watching them, drawn to anything competitive. True to her creative nature, she gravitates toward anything artsy or craftsy, whether it’s visiting museums or exploring new artistic techniques.
Looking ahead, Neci envisions significant growth for What’s She Creating Enterprises. Her five-year plan includes establishing an event center with dedicated space for domestic sewing classes, those focused on home sewing projects for everyday use. She also dreams of incorporating retail shops within the space.
Perhaps most ambitiously, she plans to create an academy focused on specialized textile skills like airline fabrications, automotive upholstery, and other industrial applications. By partnering with the Department of Labor, she hopes to create pathways that not only teach valuable skills but also connect graduates with employment opportunities in these fields.
This vision reflects Neci’s commitment to making sewing and textile work accessible as both a hobby and a viable career path. She recognizes that these skills offer both personal fulfillment and economic opportunity, and she’s determined to open those doors for as many people as possible.
What makes Neci Harmon’s story so compelling isn’t just her technical expertise or business acumen. It’s her genuine passion for empowering others to discover their own creative capabilities. Whether it’s a four-year-old threading her first needle or an adult finally pursuing a long-held interest in sewing, Neci creates an environment where learning feels both achievable and exciting.
Her teaching philosophy, rooted in that childhood moment when her mother handed her a pattern and said “just figure it out,” emphasizes self-directed learning supported by expert guidance. She provides the tools, knowledge, and encouragement, but ultimately empowers her students to trust their own abilities and creative instincts.
