From Breaking News to Making Space: How a 31-Year Journalist Reinvented Herself

Home, Garage and Office Organizing

Meet Kristin Bender, founder of KB At Your Service, the Bay Area’s home concierge business built on decades of community roots, people skills, and a deep desire to help.

A New Chapter, Same Passion

After three decades of chasing stories, Kristin Bender decided it was time to write a new one of her own. A veteran journalist who spent 31 years reporting for some of the Bay Area’s most respected newsrooms, including the Associated Press, the Oakland Tribune, the San Francisco Examiner, and the San Jose Mercury News, Kristin had lived a career most writers dream about. She even wrote a book about it. But when she felt the pull to do something different, she did what any good reporter would: she asked the right questions.

“I looked at what skills I had other than reporting and writing, and I looked at what I really wanted to do,” she says. “I wanted to help people.”

That reflection led Kristin to launch KB At Your Service 18 months ago, a home concierge business serving the entire San Francisco Bay Area. The name itself tells the whole story: KB are her initials, and “at your service” is not just a tagline. It is a promise.

Everything You Need, Under One Roof

KB At Your Service is built around a simple but powerful idea: busy people deserve reliable, thoughtful help. Kristin and her team handle the tasks that pile up when life gets hectic, offering home and office organization, moving coordination, pet sitting, on-site event services, furniture assembly, computer and television setup, and even a mother’s helper program for families juggling demanding schedules.

“If we can drive there, we can get there and get it done,” Kristin says simply. Her service area covers the full Bay Area, from Danville and San Ramon to San Francisco and beyond.

What makes KB At Your Service stand out is not just the breadth of services, but the depth of care that goes into each one. Before taking on any project, Kristin always sits down with her clients for a thorough conversation to understand exactly what they need, how they live, and what will make their home or event truly work for them.

“I do a pre-interview with people before I even start,” she explains. “I ask a lot of questions. I find out what their needs are, what they expect, and what they want. Because I was a journalist, I know how to really listen.”

Roots Run Deep in Danville

Kristin grew up in Danville long before it became the affluent suburb it is today. She remembers when the Iron Horse Trail was still a set of unused railroad tracks, when the only restaurant in town was a Foster’s Freeze, and when cows wandered onto her family’s front lawn. She attended Danville public schools from elementary through high school, earned her journalism degree from San Francisco State University, and spent many years in Oakland before returning to her hometown 18 years ago.

“My family is here. My roots are here,” she says. “I grew up in this community. I know these people. I know what their expectations are.”

That deep familiarity with the community she serves is one of Kristin’s greatest assets as a business owner. She understands her clients not just as customers, but as neighbors. She knows the rhythms of Bay Area life, the pressure of raising kids in the suburbs, the desire for a home that functions as a peaceful retreat rather than a source of stress.

Every Project Tells a Story

With a journalist’s instinct for narrative, Kristin has gathered a rich collection of moments from her work. She has transformed hoarder homes into organized, functional spaces, hauled donation loads to the Savers thrift store in Dublin so that clients’ discarded belongings can find new life, and assembled furniture and set up electronics for clients who simply do not have the time or inclination to do it themselves.

She has also discovered a love for the event work her business provides. Kristin and her team bartend and assist at celebrations of all kinds, from graduation parties and birthday dinners to anniversary galas.

“The Indian community here is really vibrant, growing, and expanding,” she says warmly, recalling the Diwali celebrations she has worked. “They know how to party. And they have been so nice to me, so welcoming. I have learned so much about the culture.”

That openness and curiosity are exactly what Kristin brings to every client relationship. For her, organizing a closet or serving cocktails at a party is never just a transaction. It is a chance to connect.

A Life Fully Lived

When Kristin is not running KB At Your Service, she is pursuing a life that is as varied and energetic as her career history suggests. She is a former triathlete who has completed both the Honolulu and San Diego marathons. She now swims to stay active. She loves hunting for treasures at thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales, researching the history of her finds, and creating handmade purses and greeting cards in her spare time.

She shares her life with her husband Damon, who has four grown children and ten grandchildren ranging in age from five months to sixteen years old. Kristin describes her extended family with unmistakable warmth.

“I never had kids of my own,” she says, “so it has been wonderful. I married into this great big family and I really am very lucky.”

Her mother, 88 years old, lives just a mile away. Her sister and family are nearby too. For someone who has spent much of her career covering the world’s stories, Kristin Bender has built a life that is rooted right where it began.

Never Stop Learning, Never Stop Growing

Kristin’s journey from newsroom veteran to entrepreneur is a testament to the idea that skills built over a lifetime are never wasted. They just find new applications.

“Everything that you learn in your life up to this point is a lesson,” she says, “and you can apply those lessons to a totally new thing. I did journalism for 31 years. I had a wonderful career and enjoyed every moment of it. But I wanted to do something else, and I was fortunate to still be young enough to do it. Never give up. If you want to do something, you can do it.”

It is a philosophy that shows in everything KB At Your Service does. Kristin brings 31 years of deadline discipline and people skills to every client interaction, 15 years of hospitality experience to every event she works, and the deep community knowledge of someone who has literally grown up on these streets.

She is currently offering a special discount for seniors 55 and older: purchase two hours of home organization and receive a third hour free. It is just one example of how Kristin thinks about her clients, not as transactions, but as people whose lives she genuinely wants to make easier.
