In the heart of the Sacramento region, a new nonprofit counseling center is quietly transforming lives by addressing a critical and often overlooked need within the Slavic immigrant community. Founded by Nadia Tyutyunik, Willow Branch Counseling was created with one mission in mind: to provide culturally competent mental health support for Ukrainian refugees, Russian-speaking families, and Slavic individuals navigating trauma, cultural transitions, and emotional healing.
After receiving its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in June of last year, Willow Branch Counseling officially began serving clients earlier this year. Since then, the organization has quickly become a trusted resource for individuals and families searching for therapists who understand not only their language, but also their cultural background and life experiences.
“For many people in the Slavic community, therapy can feel unfamiliar or difficult to trust,” explained founder Nadia Tyutyunik. “We wanted to create a safe place where clients feel understood culturally, emotionally, and linguistically.”

What makes Willow Branch Counseling unique is its specialized focus on serving the Slavic population in the Sacramento area. While there are individual therapists throughout California who may speak Russian or Ukrainian, very few organizations are dedicated specifically to the mental health needs of Slavic immigrants and refugees.
The clinic’s therapists speak Russian and Ukrainian and understand the complex emotional challenges many immigrant families face. Clients often seek support for trauma recovery, relationship struggles, communication difficulties, parenting conflicts, and the stress of balancing traditional Slavic values with American culture.
Many of the clients served by Willow Branch Counseling are refugees who have experienced significant upheaval and trauma. The organization’s team is trained in trauma-focused therapies, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a highly effective treatment approach for trauma recovery. Members of the counseling team have even worked directly with Ukrainian refugees in Poland, bringing firsthand experience and compassion to their work.
Rather than relying heavily on traditional advertising, Willow Branch Counseling has grown primarily through trust and relationships within the community. The organization partners with local churches, nonprofit organizations, schools, and community groups such as the Slavic American Chamber of Commerce and Slavic Assistance Center to build referral networks and connect families with needed support.
“Our community values personal recommendations and trusted relationships,” Nadia shared. “Word of mouth has been incredibly important for us.”
The clinic also maintains an active presence online through Instagram and professional directories like Psychology Today, where many new clients discover their services. Educational content, mental health resources, and information about upcoming workshops are shared regularly to help reduce stigma surrounding therapy and encourage healthy conversations about emotional well-being.
Accessibility and affordability remain central priorities for Willow Branch Counseling. Understanding that many families face financial hardship, the nonprofit offers reduced-fee counseling options with sliding scale rates. The organization is also actively working to expand insurance coverage, like Medi-Care and private insurance partnerships, to make services more accessible for underserved communities.
Despite the challenges of building a nonprofit organization from the ground up, Nadia remains deeply committed to expanding mental health resources for Sacramento’s growing Slavic population.
“The need is there,” she said. “People are looking for support, healing, and connection. We want them to know they don’t have to face these struggles alone.”
As Willow Branch Counseling continues to grow, the organization hopes to expand its trauma treatment programs, increase community outreach efforts, and continue creating a lasting impact for immigrant and refugee families throughout the Sacramento area.
For many clients, Willow Branch Counseling represents more than therapy — it represents understanding, hope, and a bridge between cultures during life’s most difficult moments.
