Meet Stephen Vaughn: Going Above the Standard to Create Weddings People Remember

Anomaly DJ and Photos - Creating an atmosphere that guests will remember

How Stephen Vaughn and Erin Mahoney built Anomaly DJ and Photo around one simple idea: treat every couple’s wedding like the once-in-a-lifetime event it is.

For couples planning a wedding, music is far more than background entertainment. The right DJ helps shape the rhythm of the celebration, keeps the evening moving naturally, and creates the kind of atmosphere guests remember long after the last song has played.

It is a responsibility Stephen Vaughn understands well. Years behind the DJ booth showed him how much preparation, attention to detail, and genuine care could influence the way a couple experiences their wedding day.

That experience eventually led Stephen and his fiancée, Erin Mahoney, to build Anomaly DJ and Photo, a Highland, Indiana-based company providing DJ and MC services and photo booth experiences primarily for weddings throughout the Chicagoland area and Northwest Indiana.

From the beginning, they wanted to create something that stood apart in a crowded industry. For Stephen and Erin, going “Above the Standard” means looking beyond the entertainment itself and making sure couples feel supported and well taken care of throughout the process.

A Business Built Around Doing Things Differently

The name Anomaly was chosen deliberately, reflecting Stephen and Erin’s intention to build a company that would be recognizable not through novelty, but through the standard of service surrounding every event.

The foundation for the company had been forming long before its launch. Stephen began DJing weddings at 18 and spent years working with different entertainment companies, gradually assuming responsibilities that extended well beyond the DJ booth. Erin, then working in medical coding and billing, recognized that he was already taking on much of what she would expect from someone running the business himself, and encouraged him to consider doing exactly that.

What began as a conversation about creating something of their own eventually became Anomaly DJ and Photo. Drawing on Stephen’s years of industry experience and their shared belief that wedding entertainment could be done better, they built the company around the kind of service they felt was often missing. Less than three years later, that idea has developed into a growing business with an expanding team and an increasingly busy calendar of events.

More Than Just Playing Music

For Stephen, the value of a wedding DJ extends well beyond the music itself. Planning a wedding involves months of decisions and coordination, and by the time the day arrives, couples should be able to enjoy it with confidence that the professionals around them are prepared to handle their part.

Through that experience, Stephen has seen how easily a couple’s confidence can disappear when a provider falls short on preparation, communication, or attention to detail. It is one of the reasons Anomaly places such emphasis on everything that surrounds the service itself, remaining closely involved throughout the planning process and looking beyond the immediate responsibilities of the DJ booth whenever the situation calls for it.

That attention often comes down to details guests may never notice, but couples certainly do. Whether it means anticipating a potential issue, helping coordinate the flow of the evening, or simply making sure everything is where it needs to be at the right moment, Stephen and his team are prepared to step in where they can. The aim is not merely to deliver the entertainment that was booked, but to give couples the reassurance that someone is paying attention and genuinely invested in making their wedding a success.

Every Wedding Is Someone’s One Wedding

Experience brings familiarity, but Stephen is careful not to let it become routine. A DJ may work dozens of weddings each year, yet what might be the 70th event of the season for them is, for the couple, a day they have spent months planning and may experience only once.

As their calendar has grown busier, Stephen and Erin have remained conscious of the difference between repetition for the professional and significance for the client. However many weddings the team works in a year, each couple arrives with a different vision for the day, and the responsibility is to treat it accordingly.

That same thinking extends to how they view the business itself. Rather than allowing the commercial side to drive the experience, Stephen believes that taking care of the client should come first, with the financial results following from work people genuinely value.

Building a Team That Can Deliver the Same Experience

Anomaly’s growth has required Stephen and Erin to think carefully about how new DJs are brought into the business. Team members typically begin as assistants, gaining experience at live events before progressing into training that covers DJing, MCing, and the coordination involved in managing a wedding from behind the scenes.

By integrating training into the company’s regular event schedule, Anomaly has been able to develop new talent while continuing to expand its capacity. The pace has been considerable, with the team reaching around 15 people and the number of events nearly doubling from the company’s first year to its second.

Recognition Along the Way

The standards Stephen and Erin have worked to establish are increasingly reflected in both client feedback and industry recognition. Over the past two years, Anomaly DJ and Photo has received The Knot Best of Weddings and WeddingWire honors, alongside recognition from Zola and BusinessRate, the latter placing the company among the top businesses in its county based on Google reviews.

For Stephen and Erin, however, the reviews behind that recognition carry particular weight. They offer a direct reflection of how couples experienced not only the wedding itself, but the communication, preparation, and attention that surrounded it. In an industry where much of the work happens before the first song is played, that consistency offers an important indication that the effort invested behind the scenes is being felt by the people it is intended to serve.

A Business and Partnership Built Together

Stephen and Erin brought different experiences to Anomaly, each contributing to the way the business has developed. For Erin, losing her parents at a young age meant learning independence and responsibility much earlier than expected, an experience she believes helped develop the entrepreneurial mindset that later gave her the confidence to build a business of her own.

That independence found a natural counterpart in Stephen’s years of industry experience, although neither regards Anomaly’s progress as an achievement belonging to them alone. Rather than highlighting any one individual, they emphasize the collective effort behind Anomaly, acknowledging that the work would not be possible without the contribution of the team as a whole.

Where Every Event Has Its Own Story

However carefully a wedding is planned, Stephen has learned that some of its most memorable moments are the ones no one could have anticipated. The personalities involved, the choices couples make, and the occasional surprise ensure that even after years in the industry, no two celebrations unfold quite the same way.

One wedding made that particularly clear when a couple chose to make their entrance dressed as characters from Dumb and Dumber, complete with the unmistakable blue and orange tuxedos from the film. Moments like that are part of what he enjoys about the business, because however familiar the setting may become, there is always room for something unexpected.

Looking Toward the Future

Approaching its third year, Anomaly DJ and Photo has grown quickly enough for Stephen and Erin to begin considering what the business might look like beyond its current market. Having spent most of their lives in the Midwest, they have discussed eventually entrusting the Highland location to a manager while bringing the model they have developed to another market.

Any future expansion, however, would require Stephen and Erin to carry what has worked in Highland into a larger business without allowing scale to dilute it. For them, the goal is not simply to reach more couples or enter new markets, but to prove that a growing company can preserve the standards on which its reputation was built.

It is an ambition neatly captured in the promise behind the name and their determination to remain an anomaly by continuing to operate “Above the Standard.”
