How One Mechanic Turned Personal Loss Into a Growing Automotive Startup
From working as a mechanic in high school and serving in the U.S. Army to building a technology platform designed to empower independent mechanics, Isai Mercado has turned personal experience, adversity, and innovation into a company that’s challenging traditional automotive repair models.
As the founder of Viafix, Isai is changing the way vehicle owners connect with trusted mechanics while allowing skilled professionals to build independent businesses on their own terms.
Mobile mechanics have been around for years, but Viafix takes the concept much further.
Rather than operating as another marketplace that charges customers service fees and takes commissions from mechanics, Viafix was built to give customers more choice while providing mechanics with greater independence.
Customers can search for local mechanics, compare profiles, request quotes, and choose the professional they want to work with. Mechanics, meanwhile, can create their own profiles, set their own rates, and build their reputation without surrendering a portion of their earnings to a third-party platform.
Automotive repair is already a significant expense for many vehicle owners. By eliminating unnecessary service fees and reducing barriers for independent mechanics, Viafix aims to create a more accessible experience for both sides.

Isai’s connection to the automotive industry started long before Viafix existed.
Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he attended Worcester Technical High School, where he pursued Automotive Technology. What began as an interest in automotive repair soon evolved into a lifelong career.
After graduation, he continued his mechanical career in the U.S. Army before transitioning to Caterpillar, where he worked on heavy construction equipment in Texas.
Throughout those years, he gained experience across multiple areas of the mechanical industry, from automotive repair to heavy equipment maintenance. Along the way, he developed a deep understanding of the profession and the challenges mechanics face throughout their careers.
While he enjoyed the work, he also became increasingly aware of a recurring issue within the industry.
Even skilled mechanics working for respected companies often struggled to earn enough to comfortably support themselves in rapidly growing cities like Austin.
While working in Austin, Isai began questioning why experienced mechanics were often limited by fixed wages that failed to reflect the true cost of living.
Viafix allows independent mechanics to determine their own pricing, manage their own schedules, and build businesses that reflect their skills and expertise.
By removing unnecessary middlemen and lowering the barriers to entry, Viafix provides mechanics with tools that would otherwise cost thousands of dollars to develop independently.
Behind Viafix lies a deeply personal story.
The original concept for the company emerged while Isai and his brother were working together on a project car – a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse. What started as casual conversations about the industry gradually evolved into a business idea.
Before the company officially launched, however, Isai experienced a devastating loss when his brother passed away.
For a time, he considered abandoning the project entirely. Instead, the experience became a source of motivation, strengthening his determination to turn their shared vision into reality.
Today, that vision continues to fuel the company’s growth and direction.
One of Viafix’s most innovative features is its proprietary FixIQ Service Log system.
Every repair completed through the platform is documented in a digital service history tied directly to the vehicle. Customers can see who performed the work, what parts were used, when repairs were completed, and maintain access to the information indefinitely.
The platform also incorporates a reputation and review system designed to increase accountability and trust.

One of the most significant milestones in Isai’s entrepreneurial journey came when he was selected to appear on Season 22 of The Blox, an entrepreneurship television series.
Competing alongside founders of established companies, he found himself challenged by entrepreneurs who had already built successful businesses while he was still in the early stages of developing Viafix.
The experience pushed him to refine his business model, narrow his market focus, and rethink how he approached growth. Those lessons continue to influence the way he is building and growing Viafix today.
Currently serving Austin and surrounding communities, Viafix has already attracted a growing network of independent mechanics and customers.
Looking ahead, Isai has ambitious plans for the future of Viafix.
His goal is to establish strong presence across Austin, Houston, and Dallas before expanding into additional states. Long term, he envisions physical Viafix locations that serve as hubs for mechanics, customers, and do-it-yourself vehicle owners.
These facilities would provide workspace, parts access, and resources while helping strengthen the local automotive community.
In addition to supporting repair services, the hubs would create opportunities for collaboration, skill development, and greater access to automotive resources for both professionals and enthusiasts.
As Viafix continues to grow, Isai remains focused on building a platform that empowers mechanics, promotes accountability, and helps customers connect with trusted professionals.
By combining technology, transparency, and real-world industry experience, he believes the future of vehicle repair can be more convenient, trustworthy, and accessible for everyone involved.
