On January 11, I had the opportunity to have an insightful interview with Dr. Banis Githinji focused on highlighting her contributions to the community through her practice, Advanced TeleClinic. This article showcases Dr. Githinji’s dedication to primary care, medical weight loss, and substance abuse treatment. Advanced TeleClinic focuses on providing comprehensive health care through telemedicine and in-person visits. Her practice covers Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia. The clinic emphasizes preventative measures and chronic disease management to reduce hospitalizations and improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Githinji’s journey began when she moved to the United States at the age of 13 in 2004. Her educational path included attending high school in the United States, undergraduate school at Sojourner Douglass College, and nursing school at Chamberlain University. She went on to earn her doctorate from Liberty University. Her motivation to enter the nursing field stemmed from a positive experience during her own hospital stay at the age of 17, when she received treatment for severe anemia.
Dr. Githinji launched Advanced Teleclinic Services in April 2023. Since then, Advanced TeleClinic has quickly become a vital resource for the community. Her services include comprehensive health services for all ages; tailored programs to assist patients in achieving their weight loss goals, and substance abuse treatment that is specialized to care for individuals battling addiction.
Dr. Githinji primarily offers telemedicine services, ensuring accessibility for her patients while also accommodating in-person visits when necessary. Dr. Githinji’s commitment to substance abuse treatment is particularly noteworthy. She believes in reducing the stigma associated with addiction, viewing it as a disease that requires compassionate care. Dr. Githinji views this issue as a disease rather than a personal choice. Her experience in this field dates back to 2017, where she initially worked as a registered nurse before advancing her career to a nurse practitioner.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Githinji is a devoted family woman, married with two young children aged 3 years and 8 months. She enjoys exploring new recipes and is actively involved in her community through volunteer work, including food distribution to assist the homeless; and toy drives to bring joy to children in need. She also plans health fairs and screenings in Kenya.
One of Dr. Githinji’s most impactful experiences involved a case of suspected Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Concerned for the well-being of children who were frequently brought in for medical visits despite appearing healthy, she took the responsible step of reporting the case to social services.
Dr. Banis Githinji exemplifies the spirit of local heroes through her unwavering dedication to healthcare and community service. Her story is a testament to the power of compassion and the importance of accessible medical care. We are proud to share her journey and encourage others to support local heroes like Dr. Githinji, who are making a difference in our communities every single day.
