In the heart of Seattle’s Leschi neighborhood, a passionate financial advisor is on a mission to change how his community approaches investing and retirement planning. Marcus Cullen, a lifelong Seattle resident and Edward Jones financial advisor, has dedicated his career to helping new investors and small business owners build the financial foundation they need for a secure future.

Born at the University of Washington Hospital, Marcus proudly calls himself a “born Husky.” Growing up in Seattle’s central area, he witnessed firsthand how lack of financial education can impact entire communities. This personal experience would later fuel his passion for financial literacy and become the driving force behind his professional journey.

From Personal Discovery to Professional Purpose

Marcus’s path to financial services wasn’t traditional. His journey began with a personal realization during his own professional career when he started planning for retirement. “I didn’t know what I didn’t know about investing and saving,” Marcus reflects. “I had never actually received that type of education growing up.”

The turning point came during COVID when Marcus began investing for himself and discovered the true power of the financial markets. As he gained knowledge and confidence, he noticed a troubling pattern in conversations with friends and community members – many hadn’t started investing at all, not because they didn’t want to, but because they lacked knowledge and didn’t have anyone they could trust to guide them.

This realization sparked Marcus’s passion for financial education. He recognized that by providing resources and education to people at a younger age, he could help them create wealth for themselves and their families, establishing financial habits that could be passed down through generations.

Personalized Service for Every Financial Journey

What sets Marcus apart in the competitive world of financial services is his commitment to personalized service. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, he works closely with each client to understand their individual needs, goals, and objectives. From budgeting fundamentals to comprehensive retirement planning, Marcus creates customized plans tailored specifically for each person’s unique situation.

His ideal clients span a broad age range from 25-year-olds just starting their careers to those approaching pre-retirement. Marcus has a particular passion for working with the African-American community, understanding the unique challenges and opportunities that exist within different demographic groups when it comes to building wealth.

Currently operating as a solo practitioner while sharing office space with senior financial advisors, Marcus covers the entire Puget Sound region with a primary focus on the greater Seattle area. His practice specializes in two key segments: new investors who haven’t yet started their retirement investing journey, and small business owners seeking financial guidance and resources.

Deep Seattle Roots and Community Connection

Marcus’s connection to Seattle runs deep. Beyond being born and raised in the city, he’s a devoted sports fan who holds season tickets for both the University of Washington Huskies and follows the Seattle Seahawks religiously. His sports enthusiasm extends to rugby with the Seattle Seawolves, baseball with the Mariners, soccer, and hockey with the Kraken. He is eagerly waiting for the return of the Seattle Supersonics.

This local connection isn’t just about entertainment it reflects Marcus’s deep investment in his community. He regularly travels to support the Huskies at away games and has been part of significant Seattle events, including providing security services during the World Trade Organization events that brought national attention to the city.

Giving Back Through Education and Mentorship

Marcus’s commitment to financial education extends far beyond his client relationships. This Spring he will volunteer with FIGG, Filling in Generational Gaps a non-profit organization working with high school sophomores and juniors to provide financial literacy education. This program takes approximately 40 students annually on educational tours of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), combining financial education with exposure to higher education opportunities.

As someone preparing to join the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, Marcus understands the importance of building strong business relationships while maintaining his focus on community service and education.

Personal Values and Life Balance

Family plays a central role in Marcus’s life and motivation. Two years ago, he experienced what he describes as a major life event – welcoming his first granddaughter into the world. This milestone reinforced his commitment to building generational wealth, not just as a professional concept but as a personal mission for his own family.

Marcus is the proud father of two daughters who live in the Puget Sound area, and he’s part of a large extended family that includes four siblings and approximately ten nieces and nephews, most of whom have chosen to remain in the Seattle area. Even siblings who left for college attending schools like Alabama A&M, Tuskegee University, and the University of Missouri have largely returned to call Seattle home.

When he’s not helping clients plan their financial futures, Marcus enjoys riding motorcycles and pursuing his hobby in comedy. He’s performed at local comedy clubs during open mic nights, finding that his natural personality and energy translate well to making people laugh a skill that undoubtedly serves him well in building rapport with clients.

Why Seattle Remains Home

Despite the rising cost of living and housing prices that have affected many longtime residents, Marcus remains committed to Seattle. His love for the city encompasses its natural beauty, cultural richness, and strategic location. From the arts and music scene to theater, from beautiful lakes and rivers to mountains and hiking trails, Marcus appreciates the outdoor lifestyle that Seattle enables.

The city’s moderate marine climate, with its four distinct seasons that avoid extreme temperatures, creates what Marcus describes as comfortable year-round living. The proximity to destinations like Las Vegas, California, and Canada adds to Seattle’s appeal as a home base for someone who values both local community and broader accessibility.

Vision for the Future

Looking ahead five years, Marcus envisions a practice built on a solid foundation of new investors and pre-retirement clients who have developed strong budgeting skills and financial knowledge. His ultimate goal extends beyond individual client success – he wants to see families equipped with financial education they can share with friends and relatives, creating a ripple effect of financial literacy throughout the community.

Marcus’s vision centers on building “good, solid financial foundations for families” and ensuring that financial planning habits and education are passed down through generations. By removing the stress and uncertainty around retirement planning, he hopes to empower entire communities to take control of their financial futures.
