Practical Solutions - Julie Williams is Making a Difference with Practical Solutions

Nestled in the vibrant community of Newport Beach, Julie Williams is on a mission to transform the way educators and families support children with disabilities. With over 20 years of experience in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and special education, Julie has founded Practical Solutions, a consulting business dedicated to equipping teachers and parents with evidence-based strategies that are both effective and, most importantly, practical.

The Inspiration Behind Practical Solutions

Julie’s journey into the world of special education and ABA began on a personal level. As a mother to a daughter with spina bifida, she experienced firsthand the profound impact that dedicated therapists and educators can have on a child’s life. “My daughter’s first physical therapist, Ms. Anna, was incredible,” Julie shares. “She not only provided excellent care but also taught me so much. That experience inspired me to become someone who could help families in a similar way.”

Over the years, Julie transitioned from a classroom teacher to a program specialist, working directly with school districts to provide training and consultation. However, she quickly realized that many of the existing strategies weren’t always accessible or easy to implement for teachers and parents. This realization led her to create Practical Solutions, a business designed to bridge that gap by making ABA strategies more user-friendly and adaptable for real-world use.

What Practical Solutions Offers

Practical Solutions provides a variety of services to meet the unique needs of educators and families. These include:

  • Teacher Training: Helping educators integrate ABA-based strategies into their classrooms in a way that is approachable and feasible.
  • Parent Consultation: Guiding parents in implementing effective techniques at home to support their child’s development.
  • Classroom Development: Assisting schools in creating an environment that fosters learning and skill-building for students with disabilities.
  • IEP (Individualized Education Program) Support: Educating parents on how to advocate for their child’s needs within the school system.

Julie emphasizes the importance of progressive ABA, a more contemporary and natural approach that moves away from rigid methods. “ABA is a science-backed practice, but it has to be implemented correctly to truly benefit the child. Unfortunately, not everyone in the field is adequately trained, which can lead to ineffective or even harmful practices. My goal is to empower educators and families with the right tools so they can make informed decisions.”

Serving Newport Beach and Beyond

Although Practical Solutions is based in Newport Beach, Julie’s expertise extends far beyond Southern California. Thanks to virtual consultation options, she has been able to work with families and educators across the country, including in New York, where she originally hails from. That said, she has a strong preference for in-person training and is committed to building connections within her local community.

“I love Newport Beach. The people, the environment, and the schools—it’s a wonderful place to be. While I’m happy to work with clients nationwide, I’m especially passionate about supporting families and educators right here in my own backyard.”

A Vision for the Future

Currently, Practical Solutions is in its early stages, but Julie has big plans. Within the next five years, she hopes to transition into running the business full-time, moving away from her current role within a school district. Her ultimate goal is to establish strong partnerships with local schools and districts that are truly invested in providing high-quality education and support for students with disabilities.

“I want to help schools go beyond just ‘checking the box’ when it comes to special education training. I want to see meaningful skill-building that enhances the quality of life for these students. And for families, I want them to feel confident advocating for their children and applying effective strategies at home.”

Why Choose Practical Solutions?

Julie’s extensive experience, personal connection to the field, and commitment to making ABA strategies practical and accessible set her apart. She isn’t just another consultant—she’s someone who has lived through the challenges that many of her clients face.

“For me, this work is personal. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t, both as a professional and as a parent. I’m here to share my knowledge and ensure that children receive the support they need in a way that truly makes a difference.”
