FLUID: Transforming Spaces and Reducing Waste in the Bay Area

FLUID - professional organizing that goes far beyond simply tidying spaces

Teresa Delgado, Owner and Founder of FLUID

In a world where clutter accumulates and textile waste fills landfills at an alarming rate, Teresa Delgado is leading a revolution in professional organizing that goes far beyond simply tidying spaces. As the owner and founder of FLUID, a San Leandro-based professional organizing service, Teresa has created a business model that seamlessly blends organization, sustainability, and social impact.

From Visual Merchandising to Professional Organizing

FLUID - professional organizing that goes far beyond simply tidying spaces

Teresa’s journey into professional organizing began decades before FLUID officially launched in 2021. Starting her career in visual merchandising in her early 20s, she honed her organizational skills working with major retail stores like Macy’s, where she transformed store layouts seasonally and created compelling visual narratives for consumers.

“Visual merchandising and marketing tells a story,” Teresa explains. “When a consumer walks in, they’re being shown what is in the store and how to use it.” This philosophy of creating functional, beautiful spaces naturally evolved into helping individuals organize their homes.

Born in Hayward and raised in the East Bay, Teresa has deep roots in the community. Her father moved from the Philippines and was stationed in Alameda, while her mother’s family relocated from Seattle, Washington. Her great-great-grandmother was Inupiat from Nome, Alaska, creating a rich multicultural heritage that informs Teresa’s approach to community service.

A Legacy of Creative Entrepreneurship

Teresa’s entrepreneurial spirit manifested early when she opened her first brick and mortar location in 1994: Bozikis Salon. More than just a salon, Bozikis featured local artisans and hosted art reception openings, creating a vibrant community space that celebrated Oakland’s creative culture.

After living abroad from 2006 to 2007, Teresa returned to open TOCH Salon & Gallery in 2007, continuing her tradition of blending beauty services with support for local artists. By 2019, she had relocated and transformed the business into TOUCH Collective, pivoting to offer 90% retail featuring products made by local artisans and makers, with only 10% dedicated to salon services. This evolution demonstrated her keen ability to adapt to changing market demands while staying true to her community-focused values.

When the pandemic forced TOUCH Collective to close in March 2020, Teresa once again proved her resilience by transitioning to mobile hairstyling services in 2021. This mobile approach allowed her to continue serving clients while maintaining safety during uncertain times.

A Business Born from Adaptability

The name FLUID emerged during the pandemic, a time when small business owners faced unprecedented challenges. As someone who had been a business owner for over 30 years, Teresa recognized the need to adapt and evolve. “You need to stay FLUID,” she realized. “Learn to go with the flow.”

As her mobile hairstyling services expanded, clients began requesting help organizing their homes. This natural evolution from salon owner to professional organizer reflects Teresa’s lifelong commitment to meeting her community’s needs wherever they arise. By officially launching FLUID in 2021, Teresa brought together decades of experience in creating beautiful, functional spaces with her deep understanding of community needs.

Comprehensive Services for Every Life Stage

FLUID offers a wide range of services throughout the Bay Area, extending from San Francisco to the greater Sacramento area. Teresa specializes in organizing homes and workspaces, helping clients with packing and relocation whether local or overseas, and maintaining Airbnbs to ensure they’re guest-ready.

Her client base reflects the diverse needs of Bay Area residents: young couples buying their first homes and expanding their families, established families caring for aging parents who need to transition to assisted living, and everyone in between. Teresa has even tackled challenging projects like garage cleanouts with rat infestations, approaching each situation with professionalism and compassion.

One of Teresa’s unique strengths is her ability to adapt spaces for accessibility. Whether helping someone rearrange furniture to accommodate medical equipment or creating efficient systems for families with small children, she ensures that every space works for its inhabitants.

The Zero-Waste Mission

What truly sets FLUID apart is Teresa’s commitment to keeping items out of landfills. Rather than simply hauling unwanted belongings to the dump, Teresa has built relationships with over 16 nonprofits throughout the Bay Area, carefully redistributing donations to people who truly need them.

Her passion for textile waste reduction stems from a life-changing experience living on a farm in Greece for a year. During that time, garbage services went on strike, forcing Teresa to completely rethink her relationship with consumption and waste. “What I brought into my home could not have waste, or I repurposed things,” she recalls. She washed and reused bags, repaired and altered clothing with her sewing machine, and learned to live with minimal waste.

The statistics are staggering: in California alone, 2,000 pounds of textile waste are buried in landfills every second. Teresa is determined to change this reality. To date, Teresa has personally diverted over 3 tons of textile waste from landfills over the past three years. She repurposes textiles that are stained or torn into pet beds, which she donates to people who have rescued dogs from shelters or directly to organizations like Rocket Dog Rescue in East Oakland.

Her ultimate goal is to acquire a textile shredding machine to process textile waste more efficiently, transforming materials that would otherwise end up in landfills into useful products.

Community Connection and Social Impact

Teresa’s commitment to community runs deep, influenced by her grandparents who owned a barbershop and restaurant in what was once known as “Little China” in the Fruitvale neighborhood of East Oakland. This area, originally a redlined district designated for Asian communities, is where her parents met and where she learned the importance of interconnection and giving back.

As a hairstylist, Teresa offered free haircuts to the unhoused community at various nonprofit organizations. Through this work, she developed relationships with nonprofits and learned what they needed most. She now helps furnish a men’s home in Union City with sheets and towels, provides suits and ties for men transitioning from incarceration or recovery centers, and teaches sewing workshops at the Covenant House for youth ages 18 to 24.

Her flexible pricing model reflects her commitment to accessibility. When clients face financial hardship, Teresa adjusts accordingly, sometimes accepting payment when they’re back on their feet or requesting a Google review in exchange for services.

Recognition and Certifications

Teresa’s innovative approach has earned recognition in the sustainability space. She is a California Green Certified Business and a Zero Waste affiliate. In 2025, she won an Innovation Award for a circular economy pitch competition with WPWMA and the Carlsen Center for her concept ‘FLUID: Transforming Spaces and Reducing Waste in the Bay Area.’ She earned second place in a circular economy pitch competition in Placer County and advanced to the semi-finals in the downtown Sacramento “Calling All Dreamers” competition.

Beyond formal awards, Teresa celebrates daily wins, believing that recognizing small victories is essential to showing up for herself and others.

Teaching the Next Generation

Education is central to Teresa’s mission. She recently launched sewing workshops at the San Leandro Public Library with only 12 spots available. The response was overwhelming, with 80 people on the waiting list for the first session.

“I want everybody to learn how to sew,” Teresa says. These workshops represent another approach to tackling textile waste by teaching people to repair and alter their own clothing rather than discarding it.

Teresa also mentors young gig workers, typically under age 24, showing them what it means to provide excellent customer service and run a business. Many are friends’ children who have chosen entrepreneurship over college, and Teresa serves as a role model, demonstrating that women of color over 40 can build successful businesses.

A Vision for the Future

Looking five years ahead, Teresa envisions a world where nine out of ten public libraries teach sewing workshops, where textile shredders are as common in homes as paper shredders, and where the mountains of textile waste accumulating in landfills have disappeared. She dreams of a less consumer-driven culture where people value repair and reuse over constant replacement.

Her Buddhist practice, which she embraced more fully during the pandemic, guides her philosophy: “Many bodies, one mind.” She believes that by teaching others to share her mindset about textile waste, collective action can create meaningful change.

The FLUID Difference

Teresa describes herself as an unusual person who attracts unusual people. She creates space for authentic connections with clients, taking time for a cup of tea before beginning work, learning about their goals and stories. This European-inspired approach to time and relationships sets her apart in America’s rushed culture.

Her non-judgmental presence allows clients to trust her with their most personal spaces. She understands that everyone has something tucked away that reveals a piece of themselves, and she treats these discoveries with respect and discretion.

Embracing Bay Area Diversity

Teresa remains committed to the East Bay, drawn to its diversity, warmer weather, and strong immigrant communities. She loves learning about different cultures, cooking traditions, and family dynamics. Her home base in San Leandro allows her to stay connected to the creative spirit that still thrives in East Oakland and surrounding areas.

From her early days working in San Francisco’s vibrant arts scene of the early 1990s to her current focus on immigrant communities, Teresa has always been drawn to authentic cultural experiences and meaningful human connections.
