In Rock Hill, South Carolina, just 20 minutes from Charlotte, Elihu Bey is reshaping how students access quality education.
As the founder of Above and Beyond Math Tutoring, Elihu’s mission goes far beyond teaching equations and solving math problems—he’s committed to making education accessible for all.
Elihu’s passion for tutoring began with a realization: traditional tutoring services often cater to middle- and upper-class families, leaving many students without access to the support they need.
This gap inspired him to create a donation-based program offering math tutoring, engineering workshops, and coding classes.
Through his nonprofit, Elihu ensures students from all backgrounds can participate in personalized learning experiences that prepare them for the 21st century.
Above and Beyond Math Tutoring operates out of the Gravity Center in downtown Rock Hill, a space designed for collaboration and community.
The center provides classrooms and conference rooms where students can attend workshops, socialize, and explore their potential in STEM fields like engineering and coding.
“We’ve created a space where students can not only learn but also dream about careers in STEM,” says Elihu. “Whether it’s drag-and-drop coding or programming robots, we’re making these experiences affordable and accessible.”
The tutoring program offers personalized support for students in elementary through high school, including SAT prep and advanced math tutoring.
Beyond traditional subjects, Elihu and his team also introduce students to engineering and coding through hands-on workshops. These programs primarily target middle school students, providing a crucial foundation during their formative years.
For high school students, Elihu employs specialized tutors like Alexa, who focuses on advanced subjects like Algebra II.
“It’s all about meeting students where they are,” he says.
Elihu’s efforts are supported by a dedicated team of volunteers and partnerships with local schools, churches, and community organizations. Counselors often refer students who may benefit from tutoring but face financial constraints.
The nonprofit model allows Above and Beyond Math Tutoring to rely on grants and donations rather than charging high fees.
“Our goal is to reach those who might otherwise fall through the cracks,” Elihu explains.
This semester marks a significant milestone for Above and Beyond Math Tutoring.
By grouping students in small cohorts, Elihu can make tutoring more affordable while maintaining the benefits of personalized instruction.
This innovative approach enables him to expand his reach and impact.
Elihu’s dedication extends beyond his business.
He’s also a full-time teacher at Dutchman Creek Middle School, where he witnesses the challenges students face in the classroom firsthand.
“When you work with students one-on-one, you see just how wide the learning gap can be,” he says. “It’s a crisis, but it’s one I believe we can solve with the right approach.”
Elihu’s ultimate goal is to create opportunities for all students, regardless of their financial situation.
“Most tutoring businesses chase the highest-paying clients,” he says. “I’m doing the opposite. I want to ensure no student is left behind simply because of their family’s income.”
Through his innovative programs, community partnerships, and passion for education, Elihu Bey is transforming lives one student at a time.
