Local business owners often have incredible stories, and Denetra Jackson’s journey is no exception. As the founder of Wiff and Nibble, a Detroit-based novelty gift company specializing in food-themed scented candles and soaps, she transformed her life’s challenges into a unique business that satisfies cravings for nostalgia and comfort. Let’s dive into how Denetra’s story and her commitment to creativity have shaped a one-of-a-kind experience for her customers.
The story of Wiff and Nibble began in a deeply personal place. Denetra’s inspiration for her business stemmed from overcoming a difficult chapter in her life, during which she embarked on a transformative journey, both physically and mentally. To avoid old habits, she discovered that simply smelling desserts could satisfy her cravings—a sensory trick that sparked her imagination. This unique approach to self-care became the foundation of Wiff and Nibble, where her love for creativity and food come together in every product.
Wiff and Nibble is more than just a novelty gift company; it’s a celebration of food memories. Denetra’s collection includes candles and soaps that look and smell like familiar treats, from Froot Loop cereal to fresh apple pie. Each product brings a hint of nostalgia, with scented candles that smell exactly like their real food counterparts. For instance, the Froot Cobbler Skillet Candle, offered in peach, apple, and strawberry, comes in a genuine cast-iron skillet, creating a realistic and comforting experience.
“We currently offer around 70 products, from scented candles to food-themed refrigerator magnets. It’s a creative way to let people indulge in the scents they love without the calories,” says Denetra. Her creations appeal to food lovers, gift givers, and novelty enthusiasts alike.
Based in Detroit, Denetra has always believed in contributing to her community. Detroit’s recent growth and transformation mirror her own journey, and she’s proud to call it home. In just over a year, Wiff and Nibble has gained remarkable traction. The business was selected as a vendor for the NFL Draft in Detroit, featured on local Fox 2 News, and spotlighted in LA Weekly. Additionally, Denetra was chosen as one of only 13 participants in Detroit’s competitive Retail Boot Camp, a program sponsored by TechTown Detroit and Wayne State University.
From foodies to real estate agents, Wiff and Nibble appeals to a broad spectrum of customers. Realtors often purchase her realistic pie candles to set a cozy mood during open houses, while others buy these unique items as fun gifts or to prank friends with a realistic yet inedible dessert. The versatility of her products makes them popular among interior decorators, practical jokers, and anyone who appreciates a little whimsy.
“We’re still exploring our ideal customer base,” says Denetra. “But we know our candles and novelty gifts resonate with people who appreciate a sensory experience and the creativity behind each product.”
Denetra has big dreams for Wiff and Nibble. She recently pitched her products to major retailers like Walmart and Cracker Barrel, which has sparked interest in her skillet candle collection. With commercial accounts and private equity groups expressing interest, Denetra is preparing to scale her business to meet higher demands, potentially working with a manufacturer in the near future.
Supporting her community is a core value for Denetra. Through local organizations like the Global Empowerment Ministries and the Michigan Black Business Alliance, she engages in various community programs, from entrepreneurship events to expungement fairs. She’s also an active member of the Michigan Christian Business Women’s group, a network that helps her connect with fellow female entrepreneurs across the state.
Wiff and Nibble is an inspiring example of creativity, resilience, and community spirit. Denetra Jackson’s vision for her business goes beyond simple products; it’s about creating experiences that remind people of life’s simple pleasures. As she continues to grow her brand and explore new opportunities, she remains dedicated to making Detroit a sweeter place to live, one candle at a time.
