In the heart of the greater Philadelphia area, Dr. Jessica Thomas and her husband Josh are redefining what it means to run a family business. As co-founders of 5 Tribe Vending, the Thomases are making waves in the vending machine industry by blending convenience, education, and community impact into a single, powerful mission.
5 Tribe Vending provides full-service vending machines, offering snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. But what sets them apart isn’t just their product offering—it’s their hands-on approach and commitment to community enrichment. Installation, stocking, and maintenance come at no charge to host businesses, making it a win-win partnership for local clinics, colleges, car dealerships, and office buildings.

With both founders having a background in education, it’s no surprise that 5 Tribe Vending goes beyond the typical vending model. For schools, the company introduces a unique educational component. Vending machines become more than just snack dispensers—they’re learning tools. Through custom-designed curriculum and training, students aged 12-24 gain critical life and workforce skills like budgeting, online research, price comparison, and team collaboration.

Though originally from Alaska, Dr. Thomas has called Philadelphia home for over 18 years after going to Temple University. She credits the city’s vibrant culture and entrepreneurial spirit for giving her the confidence to pursue her business dreams. Together with her husband and five children, the Thomases turned a desire for generational wealth into a community-centered venture that continues to grow.
What makes 5 Tribe Vending even more inspiring is how involved the entire Thomas family is. From their 11-year-old twins helping restock machines to their teenage daughter managing social media, every family member plays a role. Their oldest son even assists with logistics between college classes. It’s truly a “familypreneur” model in action.
Each summer, 5 Tribe Vending runs internship programs for local college students, offering hands-on experience in operations and marketing. Their flagship youth initiative, Trailblazers Academy, brought together over 50 local students to learn from 15 successful entrepreneurs. Participants engaged in workshops, design challenges, and received one-on-one business feedback—an event Dr. Thomas plans to host annually.

The Thomases have built giving back into the fabric of their business. Schools housing vending machines receive commission-based fundraising, while loyal curriculum partners enjoy discounts. They also offer advertising opportunities for local businesses, creating a cross-promotional platform that benefits everyone involved.
Slated for launch in summer 2026, the Familypreneur Academy will invite other families to learn how to launch and run businesses together. This bold next step aims to replicate the Thomases’ model of combining business, education, and family into a single powerful formula for success.
At its core, 5 Tribe Vending is about more than snacks. It’s about empowerment, education, and uplifting the community. The Thomases show that with heart, hustle, and a strong family bond, local businesses can achieve something truly extraordinary.
