For Gaby “Lucho” Alvarez, teaching has always been first nature. With a master’s degree in education and years of experience mentoring others, Gaby found his calling in a life-saving niche: CPR and first aid training. He is the founder of Lucho CPR and First Aid, a one-man operation based in Hollywood, Florida, that offers certified CPR, First Aid, AED use, and Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart and Red Cross standards.
What sets Gaby apart is his passion for education and clarity. Unlike many instructors from clinical backgrounds, Gaby’s foundation in teaching helps him make complex procedures like CPR and choking response easy to understand for everyone—whether they’re healthcare professionals, first-time parents, fitness instructors, or child care staff.
Gaby’s journey toward building his own business wasn’t straightforward. Originally from Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, Gaby started teaching CPR in 2017. After Hurricane Maria devastated the island, he relocated to Florida and began rebuilding his career. A couple of years ago his grandfather had several heart attacks which raised his awareness of heart failures and the recent birth of his son, Luca. This provided a powerful personal motivation to pursue Lucho CPR & First Aid full time.
“Teaching infant CPR took on a whole new meaning once I had my baby,” Gaby shared. “I knew I needed to help others the same way I wanted to protect my own family.”
From West Palm Beach to Miami, Gaby travels across South Florida offering hands-on classes tailored to individuals, families, and companies. His goal? To make life-saving education accessible and engaging. He provides Basic Life Support (BLS) training for healthcare providers and CPR/First Aid certification for the general public. He also installs and inspects AEDs, ensuring workplaces are fully equipped to handle emergencies.
Gaby is already trusted as an instructor by major CPR training firms and now, he’s working to grow Lucho CPR & First Aid as one of the top training centers in South Florida, building direct relationships with businesses and organizations.
What makes Lucho CPR stand out isn’t just its certifications—it’s the approachable teaching style. As someone who has taught people from all walks of life, Gaby knows how to turn a potentially intimidating topic into a comfortable, empowering experience.
He recounts a personal moment when his own infant son began to choke. “In that moment, I didn’t panic. I applied what I teach. And it worked. That’s when I truly saw the value of this training firsthand.”
While Lucho CPR & First Aid is still a relatively young venture, Gaby is optimistic about its future. He sees a growing demand for safety training, especially among businesses looking to certify entire teams. His current challenge? Raising awareness and making sure that people are prepared in case of an emergency.
“I know I provide quality service,” Gaby says. “My reviews speak for themselves. But getting in front of people is the hard part. That’s why I’m grateful for opportunities like this to share my story.”
He hopes to eventually offer more classes, expand his service area, and reach more parents, schools, and companies who can benefit from CPR education.
Outside of work, Gaby enjoys sports, especially basketball, and loves spending time with his family at the beach. He also has a passion for true crime shows like Dateline. But at the core of everything he does is a deep desire to help others.
“I want people to be prepared,” he says. “Cardiac arrest and choking happen every day. If I can help someone save a life, then all of this is worth it.”
