How a Chilean-born violinist created a welcoming music studio where students of all ages can grow through personalized music education
For Katherine Gray, music has never been just about learning notes or mastering an instrument. It is about helping people grow, build confidence, and discover that they are capable of achieving more than they ever imagined.
As the founder of Bee Sharp Music Studio in South Fayette, Pennsylvania, Katherine has created a welcoming environment where students of all ages can develop musical skills while enjoying every step of the journey. Through personalized instruction, an international team of professional musicians, and a genuine passion for teaching, Bee Sharp Music Studio is quickly becoming a place where music truly comes to life.
Every great music studio has a story behind its name, and Bee Sharp Music Studio is no exception.
For Katherine, the name combines a lifelong fascination with bees, a playful nod to her Chilean roots, and a clever piece of musical terminology. “Bee” reflects her admiration for the insects’ purpose and teamwork, while “Sharp” refers to the musical symbol that makes a note half by a step higher. The name also contains a subtle tribute to the violin, with “Bee” echoing the beginning of the Spanish word violín. Together, the name reflects both Katherine’s personality and her approach to music.
Perhaps no four words capture that approach better than “Where Music Becomes True.” For Katherine, music is more than something to be practiced. It’s something to be experienced, enjoyed, and shared.
Bee Sharp Music Studio offers private lessons in violin, viola, cello, piano, voice, guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, English horn, and more.
Rather than following a single teaching formula, Katherine believes every student deserves an approach tailored specifically to them.
Some students dream of performing professionally. Others simply want to learn their favorite song on the piano or finally pick up an instrument they’ve always admired. No matter the goal, the teaching approach adapts to the student, not the other way around.
Open communication is just as important as musical instruction. Students and parents are encouraged to openly communicate with instructors, creating an environment built on trust, encouragement, and continuous support.
One of Bee Sharp Music Studio’s greatest strengths is the expertise of its instructors. Unlike many studios where teachers cover several unrelated instruments, each instructor at Bee Sharp specializes in their own field.
Today, Katherine leads a team of seven instructors, each bringing not only technical expertise but also a genuine passion for helping students succeed. She credits much of the studio’s early success to the dedication of her instructors, whose enthusiasm and commitment shape the experience students have every day.
Katherine began playing the violin when she was just eight years old. Years later, her musical journey took her from Chile to the United States, where she earned both an Artist Diploma and a Master’s Degree at Duquesne University on a full scholarship.
Alongside performing, Katherine had always felt drawn to teaching. Over the years, she discovered that helping students grow was just as rewarding as performing herself.
After navigating a personally challenging period in her life, Katherine decided it was time to build something of her own, something that could positively impact others while bringing together exceptional music educators under one roof.
Bee Sharp Music Studio officially opened its doors in March 2026. Drawing on years of experience as both a performer and educator, Katherine created a studio where every student is encouraged to learn at their own pace, pursue their own goals, and develop a lasting connection with music.
Katherine’s own journey across continents is reflected in the people who teach alongside her. Today, Bee Sharp Music Studio brings together instructors from Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba, Spain, and the United States, creating a learning environment shaped by a rich mix of cultures, experiences, and musical traditions. The studio also offers lessons in both English and Spanish, making music education more accessible for bilingual families throughout the Pittsburgh area.
Inside the studio, visitors will also find a world map where students, parents, and teachers place pins showing where they come from. Inspired by The Little Prince and Katherine’s own journey across the world, the display reminds everyone that every person has their own story and every dream begins somewhere.
Although Bee Sharp Music Studio has only recently opened, Katherine says some of its most memorable moments have come from the youngest students. It’s not unusual for children to arrive with a favorite stuffed animal tucked under one arm, and at Bee Sharp, those companions are always welcome.
Before long, they become part of the lesson – “watching” practice sessions, posing for photos, and sharing in each small musical milestone. It’s a simple tradition, but one that perfectly captures the warm, encouraging atmosphere she has worked so hard to create.
One of the things Katherine has appreciated most since opening Bee Sharp Music Studio has been the support of the local community. As new students have walked through the doors, lasting relationships have naturally formed with both families and adult learners, reinforcing the welcoming atmosphere she hoped to create from the very beginning.
To make taking that first step a little easier, the studio offers every prospective student a complimentary introductory lesson, giving them the opportunity to meet their instructor, explore the space, and experience the studio before committing to regular lessons.
Bee Sharp Music Studio may still be in its first year, but Katherine is already planning for the future. As demand continues to grow, she hopes to expand the team, introduce more instruments, and eventually move into a larger facility or even open another location.
Yet for Katherine, success has never been measured by the number of classrooms or instructors. It’s measured in the confidence a child gains after mastering a difficult piece, the excitement of an adult returning to music after many years, and the relationships that make students look forward to walking through the studio’s doors each week.
After a lifetime devoted to music, that’s exactly the kind of place she set out to create.
