Jan Brown, a South Carolina native, brought with him a lifetime of experience in software sales, technology, and photography. Now, he’s channeling that knowledge into his latest venture: Dine-greenville Magazine, a brand-new publication dedicated entirely to celebrating Upstate South Carolina’s culinary scene.
Savor the stories, taste the soul of Greenville — that’s the mission behind DINE-greenville, a family-owned, veteran-led magazine built to capture the spirit of the city’s food culture.
Set to officially launch on July 9, 2025, DINE-greenville is a 64-page, free publication that covers all things food and drink across the Upstate — Greenville, Simpsonville, Travelers Rest, and surrounding areas. Unlike broad lifestyle magazines, DINE-greenville is 100% culinary-focused, offering a unique and niche perspective in the region.
With taglines like “The Upstate’s Ultimate Guide to Local Dining” and “discover, dine, delight.”, the magazine aims to become the go-to voice for local food lovers and tourists alike.
DINE-greenville aims to stand out in a crowded marketplace by producing high-quality content that resonates with its audience. Each issue will delve into the heart of Southern cuisine, featuring restaurant spotlights, chef interviews, and articles that highlight food trends and historical influences. Readers can expect to discover hidden gems and established favorites alike, all vetted through the discerning eye of the DINE-greenville editorial team.
In a city known for its burgeoning food scene, DINE-greenville is driven by a passion for Southern cuisine and a commitment to highlighting local narratives. The magazine offers curated recommendations and insightful features that celebrate the unique flavors and cultural stories of the region. It aspires to be more than just a guide-it seeks to foster a deeper connection between diners and the community, making it an essential resource for both locals and visitors alike.
A Navy veteran and photojournalist, Jan got his start in the media world after completing a two-year graphic arts program in high school. Upon graduating he worked at the Hartsville Messenger in Hartsville, SC. He served in the Navy’s public affairs office in San Diego, and later aboard the USS Kittyhawk, then earned both a Photography degree and an MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. After a 40-year career in the software industry and a life-changing move from Florida due to Hurricane lan, Jan returned to his South Carolina roots, ready to embark on a new mission.
The inspiration for DINE-greenville came from Jan’s stepdaughter and business partner, a Culinary Institute student and former restaurant owner with a passion for food and storytelling. Together with a small but dedicated team, they’ve created a platform where local restaurants can shine.
The magazine serves three primary audiences: restaurant owners and culinary professionals who advertise, local foodies eager to discover the best eats around town, and tourists that come visit the area. Every page is carefully crafted to spotlight the heart of the Upstate’s food culture.
Working alongside Jan is his stepdaughter and business partner, Jade Cahoon, the Co- Founder and Editor in Chief of DINE-greenville.
After studying both Creative Writing and Culinary Arts, Jade built her career in some of the South’s most iconic foodie cities – including Charleston, SC and Nashville, TN. Now based in Greenville, she brings her deep knowledge and love for food to the Upstate, with a vision to connect locals and visitors alike to the region’s diverse and growing culinary scene through storytelling.
“I’m passionate about two things,” she says, “experiencing a chef’s heart and soul on a plate, and sharing those moments of intrigue, wonder, and balance.”
For Jade, storytelling has always been at the heart of everything. From listening to her great-grandfather’s tales as a child, to crafting her own stories through food and writing in college, her path has always revolved around capturing and sharing authentic experiences. Becoming a mother only deepened her appreciation for how meaningful even the simplest stories can be.
“For me, this magazine represents a lifelong dream fulfilled,” said Jade Cahoon. “We want to showcase the remarkable stories behind the restaurants and chefs, encouraging readers to explore and appreciate the rich tapestry of flavors that Greenville has to offer.”
Though still in its early days, the magazine already has big dreams. In five years, Jan hopes to see DINE-greenville expand into a monthly publication covering more South Carolina cities. Currently, their marketing is grassroots, driven by organic content on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and community Facebook groups.
Copies of the magazine are distributed completely free of charge throughout the Upstate — available at realtor offices, grocery stores, wine and liquor stores, UPS stores, hotels, motels, hair salons, barbershops, and of course, in the very restaurants that are featured or advertising in the magazine.
And because it’s free and locally distributed, DINE-greenville stays accessible to anyone hungry for great food and local flavor.
Jan and his wife relocated to Greenville to be closer to their family, including their seven grandchildren. He jokes that he has no spare time, but if he did, he’d be cycling through the beautiful South Carolina landscape. His favorite part of living in the Upstate? The endless variety of fine restaurants that make the area such a natural fit for DINE-greenville.
