Connecting black women and girls to the restorative power of nature

Introduction

In the heart of St. Louis, Missouri, where urban landscapes meet pockets of serene green spaces, Victoria Faith is on a mission to connect Black women and girls to the restorative powers of nature. As the founder of Black Girls Need Sun, Victoria passionately leads a movement encouraging Black girls, women, and non-gender conforming individuals to embrace the outdoors, fostering physical and mental well-being.

The Inspiration Behind Black Girls Need Sun

Connecting black women and girls to the restorative power of nature

Victoria’s journey to creating Black Girls Need Sun is deeply personal. After experiencing a challenging period of depression, she found healing in nature, which led her to realize the importance of outdoor spaces in the lives of Black women. “I was coming out of my lowest point, and reconnecting with nature was a big part of finding myself again,” she shares. The name for her business came about spontaneously during a conversation with her daughter, further solidifying her personal connection and vision for the organization.

Empowering Through Nature

Black Girls Need Sun offers social services that connect Black girls and women with nature. Victoria highlights that the outdoor activities often feel centered around other communities, leaving Black women underrepresented. Her organization is focused on providing that much-needed representation, showing that the outdoors is for everyone. “We want to highlight the many ways you can enjoy being outside,” says Victoria. Whether it’s something as simple as walking barefoot in the grass or engaging in more structured activities, Black Girls Need Sun supports and guides.

A Community-Centered Vision

Victoria’s initiative is rooted in community. While Black Girls Need Sun is established as a for-profit LLC, Victoria’s ultimate goal is to transition into a nonprofit organization. This change will allow her to offer the activities and services at no cost to the participants, ensuring that every Black girl can benefit from what nature offers.

Support and Collaboration

Though Black Girls Need Sun is Victoria’s brainchild, she quickly acknowledges the support she receives from her family, especially her daughter Nikki, who plays an active role in the organization. As the videographer and photographer, Nikki helps capture the essence of what Black Girls Need Sun is all about. Victoria is also looking to expand her team, seeking collaboration with other Black women who share her vision of mentoring and inspiring the next generation.

St. Louis Roots and Nature’s Impact

Despite the urban setting of St. Louis, Victoria finds solace in the city’s green spaces, particularly Forest Park. This large, vibrant park is a place where Victoria has spent countless hours with her children, and it remains one of her favorite spots in the city. “Forest Park is amazing. It’s big, there’s always something going on, and it’s where our museums are, which are free and full of history,” she says.

Balancing Business and Passion

When she’s not working on growing Black Girls Need Sun, Victoria enjoys writing. Whether it’s poetry, journaling, or working on her book about overcoming depression, writing is a passion she keeps close to. This creative outlet is another way she nurtures herself, ensuring she’s in the best place to support others.

A Bright Future

Black Girls Need Sun is still in its early stages, officially launching in June of this year. However, Victoria is optimistic about its future. “I’m okay with the slow growth,” she says, acknowledging that building something meaningful takes time. As she continues to network and reach out to the community, Victoria focuses on learning and growing properly.

Join the Movement

Victoria Faith is not just asking for support; she’s inviting the community to participate in the movement. Black Girls Need Sun is about more than just one person—it’s about creating a lasting impact on the lives of Black girls and women. Victoria encourages anyone interested in partnering or collaborating to reach out and join her in this vital work. You can reach out here to help Victoria
