Pittsburgh, PA – September 2024 – In a world where the music industry can often feel exclusive and challenging, Steel Kitty Productions stands as a beacon for underrepresented voices. Founded by Debra M. The Origin Story: From Personal Struggles to Empowering Others

Steel Kitty Productions - a beacon for underrepresented voices

The journey to Steel Kitty Productions is both inspiring and deeply personal. Eleven years ago, Debra experienced a life-altering event when her apartment building burned down, leaving her with nothing. As she navigated the aftermath of this devastating loss, including a severe foot injury that left her unable to walk for over eight months, Debra found solace in the Pittsburgh singer-songwriter community. What began as a way to pass the time evolved into a passion for helping others succeed.

“I noticed these musicians were incredibly talented but struggled with the business side of their art,” Debra recalls. “I started by creating the shows I wanted to see and helping artists sell themselves. Over the years, I’ve focused on helping those often overlooked in the industry—women, people of color, and individuals on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.”

A Commitment to Inclusion and Representation

Steel Kitty Productions has become synonymous with supporting diversity and inclusion in the music industry. By focusing on underrepresented voices, Debra has carved out a niche that not only fills a gap in the market but also addresses a significant need for representation. “Our ideal clients feel unseen in the traditional music scene. We’re here to amplify their voices and provide a platform where they can shine,” Debra explains.

With services that range from promoting shows to providing background vocals and linking musicians, Steel Kitty Productions does more than just put on aperformedates an experience. “We’re not just about filling a venue. We’re about creating a space where artists feel valued and appreciated. And most importantly, we ensure our artists get paid for their work,” says Debra.

Innovative Events and Collaborations

Over the past ten years, Steel Kitty Productions has brought countless shows to life, each designed to showcase the incredible talent within Pittsburgh and beyond. Recently, Debra co-created a new open mic and podcast event called Hip Hop Fusion Cafe alongside Gallo Locknez and DJ Goodnight. This monthly event at Mr. Smalls Cafe is more than just an open mic; it’s a space for artists to collaborate, connect, and share their stories. The upcoming show on September 7th at The Funhouse at Mr. Smalls promises to be a night of dynamic performances featuring artists from Hip Hop Fusion Cafe and other talented local acts.

“I wanted to create shows where I wanted to be, where my friends and I could see the performances we loved,” Debra says. This approach has led to a loyal following and numerous opportunities for collaboration and growth.

A Team Effort

Although Steel Kitty Productions does not have formal employees, Debra quickly acknowledges the essential contributions of her collaborators, Crystal Lee Morgan and Wes Mason. “I couldn’t do this without them,” Debra shares. Their dedication and support have been integral to the company’s success, helping to bring Debra’s vision to life and ensuring that each event runs smoothly.

Giving Back to the Community

Beyond business, Debra is passionate about giving back. She volunteers with Liz Berlin’s Real Life Music Camp, a program dedicated to empowering aspiring musicians. Through this initiative, Debra helps nurture the next generation of artists, sharing her knowledge and experience to support their growth.

Looking Ahead: Growth and Balance

After a decade of hard work, Steel Kitty Productions is at a crossroads of growth and sustainability. “I’ve reached a point where I don’t have to overwork myself to get my name out there,” Debra reflects. “I can focus on the projects I’m passionate about and create shows because I want to, not because I need to. It’s about finding that balance and supporting the artists I believe in.”

A Personal Touch

Debra’s story is a testament to resilience, community, and the power of music to heal and inspire. Her journey from personal loss to creating a thriving production company that champions inclusivity is a reminder of what can be achieved when passion meets purpose. “The music scene in Pittsburgh is vibrant, and I love being a part of it,” Debra says. “It’s not just about business; it’s about being close to my nieces and nephew, enjoying the local scene, and making a difference.”

With a tagline like “Steel Kitty Productions: Herding Cats Since 2014,” it’s clear that Debra approaches her work with a sense of humor and a commitment to excellence. Whether kayaking, practicing Tae Kwon Do, or camping, Debra brings the same energy and dedication to Steel Kitty Productions, ensuring that every show is a testament to the power of music and community.
