A 2015 earthquake that killed 8000 people in Nepal is a recent example of a situation in which Nick opened his heart and his pocketbook to help others.
Q: Why do you do what you do?
A: “We are first and foremost here to help. When I lived in Nepal, everything was difficult. When I graduated and started working, the job sites were far up on the mountainside. There was no transportation. So I walked. Sometimes it would take one or 2 days one way. And it would be the same coming back. Altitude sickness could be debilitating. Some European trekkers befriended me, gave me altitude sickness medicine, and helped me develop skills to handle the mountains.
Q: What did you learn from this?
A: Their help for me really inspired me to serve others. I now know that life is best lived with the community. We can’t really make it alone. We need each other.
Q: How did you get into this profession?
A: “When I came to America, it seemed natural. I was a Civil Engineer with more than a decade of industry experience. I worked in the industry for a decade more, certifying in ASHI, CREIA, InterNACHI, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors. I completed the ICA Home Inspectors Certification, plus the ICA Professional Real Estate Inspection Certification Program.
After a while, I had learned so much that I didn’t think it was right to have to cut corners or rush jobs working for someone else.
Q: What’s the most unusual situation that ever happened to you on the job?
A: “One time, I was called out on a very cold morning to inspect a roof on a tall building. I set a 40’ ladder against the side of the building and started climbing. The client could tell I was scared. But I didn’t stop. I climbed very carefully to the top and got all the pictures we needed. He couldn’t believe I did it. As a result, I have a life-long friend and client!”
Q: If you could share one tip with the readers for choosing a home or roof inspector, what would it be?
A: “Definitely check referrals. Ask to see a copy of a report from another job, too. If it looks incomplete, or if it seems to raise more questions than answers, call somebody else. You need to know for certain that you’ll get a quality report where you can trust the results.”
