Cierra Garland’s story is a testament to passion, perseverance, and bold ambition. A lifelong lover of shoes, she launched Society Shoes in July 2024, finally embracing a dream she had nurtured since childhood. “I’ve always had a love for shoes,” she reminisces, recalling a personal collection that once spanned hundreds of pairs. Despite her deep-rooted fascination with fashion, Garland initially pursued a career in corrections, later transitioning to a role as a workers’ compensation coordinator. Yet, a lingering sense of unfulfillment eventually drove her to pursue her true calling. “Corrections was where the money was, but it wasn’t my passion,” she explains.
Inspired by fashion icons like Mia Ray, who transformed a modest start into a million-dollar handbag business, Garland began the journey of developing her own brand. After extensive research and prototyping, she set out to create a shoe that was both stylish and comfortable, a balance she felt the market needed. “I wanted to create a shoe that was bold and elegant yet wearable for any occasion,” she says, highlighting her commitment to versatility in design.
Garland’s dedication to sustainability also shapes her brand’s ethos. Society Shoes are crafted from eco bio-leather, a plant-based material made from renewable sources like pineapple leaves. “There are people who won’t buy something that’s not eco-friendly,” she explains, noting the increasing demand for sustainable fashion. This focus on responsible sourcing and eco-friendly production differentiates Society Shoes in a competitive landscape.
Looking ahead, Garland’s plans extend well beyond footwear. As she gears up for major events like New York Fashion Week and Miami Swim Week in 2025, along with being on the startup TV show
“The Blox,” she is developing a complementary line of handbags and an ankle boot collection. “I’m working on an animal print collection that will include matching handbags and shoes,” she reveals, aiming for a holiday season launch to showcase these unique designs.
At 37, Garland has a broader vision for her brand. Her entrepreneurial creativity also extends to Blinkin’ Beauty, a line of handmade Siberian mink eyelash strips and other items inspired by her pandemic projects. Yet, through it all, she remains grounded. “It’s different when you’re doing something you love versus something you have to do for a paycheck,” she reflects, underscoring her commitment to Society Shoes as more than just a business venture; it’s her way of bringing bold, sustainable fashion to everyday women.
Raised in Baltimore and a graduate of Carver Vocational Technical High School, Garland credits her disciplined work ethic to early mentors. Reflecting on her first job, she says, “She [her boss] really taught me how to be disciplined and show up for myself.” These values now permeate every aspect of her brand, as Garland approaches each day with drive and focus, always moving her business forward.
With plans to relocate to Sacramento, Garland is excited about new opportunities on the West Coast. “Every day, I do something for my small business,” she shares. “I just returned from New York City from a business trip. I am working on getting Society Shoes placed in a store in New York called Flying Solo, located in the Soho shopping district in 2025. It was such an amazing opportunity for my business. I haven’t made any final decisions at this time; I would like to be sure this is the best decision for Society Shoes.”
For Cierra Garland, this path to success is just beginning, and it’s one she’s determined to walk in her own unique style.
