Nerina Smart

For the past 12 years, Attorney Nerina Smart and her staff at “The Law Offices of Nerina Smart, PA” have been successfully getting clients properly compensated for their injuries, future medical care, as well as their pain and suffering in the Tri County (Dade, Broward & Palm Beach) area with a focus on Broward County. “What sets me apart from my competitors is my personalized attention, meaning that clients speak directly to me, and they have commented on this when compared to other firms; clients feel reassured when I can explain the status of the case and our strategy in layman’s terms and not attorney jargon;  clients appreciate the time and attention they get so they understand and are kept abreast of each stage of the process and not left in the dark;  clients develop trust to feel free to speak to me and express their concerns and fears as we work on alleviating these concerns; clients appreciate not being treated as “a dime a dozen” so to speak as in a big law firm.”

We were able to quickly attest to her stance with one of her several clients’ testimonials “I’d like to say a big “Thank You” for your recent professional services. I would like to especially say thanks for the calm and competent manner in which you handled our matter, and for the promptness with which it was dealt. My husband and I certainly appreciate your service and will definitely recommend you to our friends and colleagues.”

Nerina is what we like to call a Local Biz Hero, a self-made entrepreneur who brings true value to her community. High stands of professionalism and strong work ethics of small business owners like Nerina are the infrastructure of the city of Plantation’s economy.

We sat down with Nerina for a quick interview –

Q: Why did you go into this business?

A: “As an international student, I completed my undergraduate degree in marine biology and then obtained a Master’s degree in Health Services Administration. During the Master’s programs, I became intrigued by the Health Law class and felt compelled to take the LSAT and apply to law school. Fortunately, the stars were aligned, and I was awarded a full scholarship to attend Law School and graduated in 2006 with my degree and was admitted to practice later that year.”

Q: City where the business is in now?

A: “The main office is centrally located in Plantation.”

Q: How long?

A: “The Law Firm has been open since 2009 and has been in Plantation since 2015.”

Q: Do you also live there?

A: “15 mins from the main office.”

Q: What’s the best thing you like about the city of Plantation where your business is located?

A: “It is centrally located for serving Broward, close to the courthouse and major highways.”

Q: As far as clientele, what is your ideal customer?

A: “Family-oriented, trust relationship between attorney and client, and loyalty. Because of the nature of my practice, the trust relationship is of utmost importance between my client and myself. They have to trust that I have their best interests at heart and that I am acting for their benefit, and in turn, I have to trust the information they relay to me so that I can bring forth their claims. I appear to attract clients with complicated issues, but still manage to obtain success and at times unbelievable resolutions, much to the relief of my clients.”

Q: How many people work for you?

A: ”Our growing staff currently includes 2 employees, and we are very efficient and able to give the personal attention that our clients deserve.”

Q: Is there anyone, in particular, you would like to mention in the article? and why?

A: “My assistant Andrea, she is familiar with all the clients and has a great rapport with them and also tends to their concerns. “

Q: What is the most significant event that ever happened to you that you can relate to in your personal life?

A: “Being a role model for my girls, teaching them that they can achieve anything that they put their mind to and the freedom in being your own boss. As a female minority in this profession, it is quite often that people underestimate you. I can’t tell you how many times I have entered the courthouse and have been mistaken for a client or a paralegal. It is also very reassuring that you are doing what you were meant to do, for example when faced with a “David and Goliath” case…. you the sole attorney on one side championing the case for your client and three big firm attorneys on the opposite side of the aisle… and tiny little you prevail!”

Q: What did you learn from it?

A: “You can achieve justice no matter how large the obstacle may be! Little ripples can have a large impact.”

Q: If you could share one tip with the readers for choosing a professional in your field, what would it be?

A: ”Look for someone who is willing to listen and who you can trust to look out for your needs.”

Q: Do you provide special discounts to military folks or other special groups?

A: “Yes, we do and are very grateful for their services and sacrifices.”

Q: Do you personally or via the business support a charity or volunteer?

A: “Yes, we have volunteered for Citizenship drives with the Caribbean Bar Association.”

Q: Are you part of a local business networking group?

A: “Yes, I am a member of the Plantation Chamber.”

Q: Finally, tell our audience about you personally. Who is Nerina Smart?

A: “Born in Trinidad in the West Indies, married with two girls. I enjoy watching soccer and basketball with the family and enjoy art and baking when I can squeeze it in.”
