For John Spencer Gambill, movement has always been about more than exercise. Long before he became the owner of Highline Pilates in Corpus Christi, Texas, he was a surfer, teacher and lifelong student of how the body moves.
Today, those experiences come together inside his boutique Pilates studio, where Gambill helps clients move with greater awareness and take what they learn into everyday life. His goal is captured in Highline Pilates’ simple tagline: “Elevate your movement.”
The name Highline Pilates comes directly from Gambill’s lifelong connection with surfing.
In surfing, drawing a “high line” means moving toward the upper part of a wave to set yourself up for what comes next. Gambill sees a strong connection between that idea and the classical Pilates method he teaches, particularly its emphasis on transitions and intentional movement.
For him, the wave isn’t about one isolated maneuver. It is about how every movement connects from beginning to end. Pilates follows much the same philosophy.
That connection became especially meaningful after a surfing injury led Gambill to explore movement as a way to care for his own body. His background as an educator made teaching Pilates feel like a natural progression. Around the time of COVID, he left public school education and pursued Pilates certification more fully.

Highline Pilates is intentionally small.
Gambill primarily offers private and semi-private sessions, allowing him to give each person close attention. Instead of following a one-size-fits-all class, sessions can focus on what an individual wants to accomplish that day and over the long term.
His clients span a wide range of ages and goals. Some want to support an active lifestyle. Others simply want everyday movements—walking the dog, driving, spending time with family or getting through a busy workday—to feel better.
That variety is exactly what Gambill enjoys.
Because sessions are small, he can pay attention to how each person moves and adapt the experience accordingly. His approach centers on functional movement, awareness and helping people understand their bodies in a new way.
“This is so much more than a workout,” Gambill explains.
The idea is for clients to leave Highline Pilates with something useful beyond the studio. The awareness developed during a session can carry into driving, shopping, working or playing with the kids.
Education remains an important part of Gambill’s work.
He completed all levels of Peak Pilates training and describes his comprehensive certification process as a rigorous, years-long education. He has also continued studying the classical Pilates tradition, including learning from Pilates elders who studied directly with Joseph Pilates, the creator of the method.
That connection to the history of Pilates is something Gambill values deeply.
He sees himself as part of a teaching tradition: knowledge is passed from one teacher to another and ultimately shared with the person walking into the studio.
Clients visit Highline Pilates from Corpus Christi and surrounding Coastal Bend communities, including Portland and Rockport. Gambill also offers virtual sessions, giving clients an opportunity to continue working with him when they are away from Corpus Christi.
Although Pilates is now Gambill’s profession, teaching has been a consistent thread throughout his life.
He has taught in schools, restaurants and even in the waves. Today, he gets to combine that instinct to teach with his passion for movement.
That carries into his family life, too.
Gambill is married with two sons, and surfing remains an important part of their lives together. His sons surf competitively and train in jiu-jitsu, and when Gambill isn’t working with Pilates clients, he can often be found supporting their activities or serving as their surf coach.
Surfing, he says, isn’t simply a hobby. It is a passion.
Corpus Christi is also an important part of the Highline Pilates story. Gambill was born there and has lived in the city for years. He appreciates its connection to the water, its size and, especially, the possibilities he sees for its future.
From art and music to sports, schools, real estate and local businesses, Gambill believes Corpus Christi is growing—and he wants Highline Pilates to contribute positively to that growth.
Looking ahead, he envisions a slightly larger studio, potentially closer to the beach, with additional equipment and perhaps another instructor. Yet even as the business expands, Gambill wants to remain closely involved with clients and continue teaching.
For him, that personal connection is fundamental to Highline Pilates.
At the center of Gambill’s story is a simple idea: make room for the things that make life meaningful.
Highline Pilates grew from his love of movement, surfing and teaching. Now it gives him the opportunity to share those interests with others while building a local business around work he genuinely enjoys.
His message extends beyond the studio: take care of yourself, pursue what matters to you and find ways to bring more intention into everyday life.
For people in Corpus Christi and the surrounding Coastal Bend who want a personalized approach to movement, Highline Pilates offers a place to begin.
As Gambill puts it, the goal is to “be yourself. Follow your dreams. Love your life.” And if movement can help someone do that, he’s ready to be part of the journey.
