Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Idaho Falls, New Day Lutheran Church stands as a beacon of inclusivity and faith. At the heart of this community is Pastor Ann Bjorklund, a leader who brings a unique combination of compassion, experience, and dedication to her congregation. Here’s a closer look at the inspiring journey of Pastor Bjorklund and the vibrant community she nurtures.
New Day Lutheran Church is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), an institution deeply rooted in the principles of grace and acceptance. Founded in 2011, the church emerged as a safe haven for individuals seeking an open and affirming space. Its formation was inspired by the desire to welcome all people, particularly members of the LGBTQ+ community, with open arms—a commitment that remains central to its mission.
Pastor Ann Bjorklund joined New Day Lutheran Church in 2022, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a passion for fostering an inclusive spiritual environment. “God’s love is for everyone without exception,” she emphasizes, a message that resonates deeply within the church and its community.
Ann’s journey to becoming a pastor was one of self-discovery and perseverance. Raised with a love for faith, she often played “preacher” as a child, but her path wasn’t always clear. Over time, soul-searching and prayer led her to embrace her calling. “I struggled with questions of self-worth and acceptance,” she recalls. Through reflection and seminary studies, she found her way to a deeper understanding of her faith and purpose.
Her path was also shaped by personal experiences, including attending a Christian music festival that reignited her spiritual aspirations. Today, she brings that journey full circle by leading a congregation that celebrates diversity and offers unwavering support.
New Day Lutheran Church isn’t just a place of worship—it’s a hub of community involvement. The congregation actively participates in local initiatives such as the Idaho Falls Community Food Basket, soup kitchens, and the “Shop with a Sheriff” program. Members also volunteer at animal shelters, museums, and even local symphonies. These efforts reflect the church’s commitment to serving others and fostering a sense of belonging.
“Our presence extends beyond the church walls,” Ann shares. The church’s participation in local Pride events further demonstrates its inclusive mission, often leading to moments of recognition and connection with the broader community.
Outside of her pastoral duties, Ann embraces the beauty of Idaho’s great outdoors. She and her wife, Theresa, are avid explorers, enjoying hunting, fishing, and visiting nearby natural wonders such as Grand Teton National Park. These activities, she says, bring them closer to creation and offer moments of peace and inspiration.
Ann also finds joy in creative pursuits like painting and smoking cheese for a local company, demonstrating her multifaceted talents and zest for life.
Ann and Theresa’s partnership extends into the realm of technology and administration. Theresa has played a pivotal role in enhancing the church’s technological capabilities, from managing live streaming to supporting other congregations with their digital needs. Her expertise ensures that the church remains connected in today’s digital age.
Though New Day Lutheran Church is a small congregation, it thrives on the strength of its community and its dedication to inclusivity. “Small but mighty,” Ann describes it, highlighting the tight-knit yet far-reaching impact of their efforts.
With their Progressive Pride Flag proudly displayed on the bell tower, New Day Lutheran serves as a visible reminder of its commitment to acceptance. While not everyone may step through its doors, the church’s message of love reaches far and wide, providing solace and hope to those who see it.
Through faith, inclusivity, and community service, Pastor Ann Bjorklund and New Day Lutheran Church continue to inspire. They stand as a testament to the power of love and acceptance, offering a welcoming space for all.
