Mario Artiga isn’t your average small business owner. After spending over two decades in the high-pressure world of real estate, Mario made a bold pivot. In July 2025, he turned his long-time hobby of sharpening blades into a thriving local business: San Gabriel Valley’s Best Cutlery. Based in Duarte, CA, Mario now serves the 626 area—including Monrovia, Arcadia, Rosemead, and Temple City—offering expert sharpening services for knives, tools, scissors, and more.
What makes Mario’s business stand out? It’s not just the precise edges he crafts, but the relationships he builds. From barbershops to salons to restaurants—and even pizza truck owners—his client base is as diverse as the communities he serves. As a bilingual business owner fluent in Spanish, Mario has been able to connect with a wider range of local clients, including many Spanish-speaking small business owners.
One of Mario’s favorite ways to connect with the community is through local farmers markets. While other vendors may display pricing, Mario intentionally leaves his price tags off. Why? Because it sparks conversation. And once someone starts talking to him, his background in real estate sales kicks in. That personal touch has become a key part of how he grows his business organically.
The decision to launch his own sharpening service wasn’t just professional—it was personal. Mario wanted more flexibility to spend time with his young son. Owning his own business allows him to be present for school events, sports games, and everyday moments. And while he runs the sharpening side of the business, his partner manages much of the marketing, photography, and behind-the-scenes operations.
Community is at the heart of what Mario does. As a way to give back, he’s currently offering free sharpening services for paper cutters used by teachers in the San Gabriel Valley. It’s his way of showing appreciation for educators, many of whom work with limited resources. By donating his time and skills, Mario is making a real impact where it matters.
It’s clear that Mario is more than just a business owner—he’s a craftsman, a neighbor, and a father. His transition from real estate to cutlery might seem like a leap, but for Mario, it’s been a path toward fulfillment and freedom. With strong roots in the community, a growing client base, and a commitment to excellence, San Gabriel Valley’s Best Cutlery is sharpening more than blades—it’s shaping a better local business landscape.
Whether you’re a chef needing sharper tools or a teacher in need of a refreshed paper cutter, Mario is ready to help. Follow San Gabriel Valley’s Best Cutlery on social media or catch him at your local farmers market.
