Flowery Branch, GA – In the beautiful community of Flowery Branch, Georgia, Adam Cherney stands out not only for his towering height but for the monumental impact he is making through his nonprofit, Cherney’s Journey. Adam, a veteran with a rare spinal cord disease, founded Cherney’s Journey to transform disabilities into abilities by providing life-changing outdoor experiences for veterans and individuals with physical disabilities.

A Journey of Transformation

Adam’s story began when he was preparing for boot camp. Despite being 6’5″ and 350 lbs, Adam was determined to shed the weight and join the military. His rigorous training and unwavering resolve led to a remarkable transformation, losing 125 lbs in seven months. This journey of perseverance earned him the nickname “Journey,” a moniker that now represents his nonprofit’s mission.

Cherney’s Journey, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, focuses on taking veterans and individuals with disabilities on what they call “journeys.” These journeys range from local hikes and camping trips to grand expeditions, such as their upcoming climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2025. Adam’s vision is to empower participants, showing them that their lives are not defined by their disabilities but by their abilities.

Transforming Disabilities into Abilities

Cherney’s Journey offers a variety of programs designed to inspire and challenge its participants. The hiking program encourages physical fitness, community, and a sense of accomplishment. For many, these outdoor adventures are a gateway to discovering new capabilities and building confidence.

One of the nonprofit’s most ambitious projects is the planned ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. This extraordinary journey involves rigorous training and meticulous planning. Adam and his team, including two other individuals with disabilities, are gearing up for this life-changing expedition, highlighting their dedication to pushing boundaries and overcoming obstacles.

Building a Supportive Community

Cherney’s Journey is more than just adventures; it’s about creating a supportive community. Adam emphasizes the importance of follow-up and continued engagement with participants. The nonprofit doesn’t just stop at one journey; it aims to keep participants motivated and involved in future activities.

“We want to transform disabilities into abilities,” says Adam. “Our main goal is to push people so that when they finish a journey, they ask themselves, ‘What’s next for me?'”

Expanding Horizons

Although Cherney’s Journey is based in Georgia, the nonprofit’s reach is expanding. They support veterans and civilians across the United States and have international aspirations. With the help of dedicated volunteers and partners, Cherney’s Journey is making strides in providing these life-enhancing experiences to a broader audience.

In addition to their journey programs, Cherney’s Journey is also involved in developing adaptive equipment. They are currently working on creating hiking chairs that can handle challenging terrains like Mount Kilimanjaro. This innovation aims to make outdoor adventures more accessible to those with physical disabilities.

How You Can Help

Adam Cherney and his team are always looking for support, whether through donations, volunteering, or sponsorships. The nonprofit relies heavily on community involvement to achieve its goals. Upcoming events, such as a fishing tournament in partnership with Fishing with Everyday Heroes, provide excellent opportunities for the community to get involved and support the cause.
