In the ever-evolving world of art and design, few stories resonate as deeply as those of self-taught creators who turn personal passions into thriving businesses. Dominique Macklin, founder of Artfull Empire Designs, is a shining example of an artist, designer, and entrepreneur whose journey from digital novice to creative powerhouse is as inspiring as the vibrant products she creates. With a focus on handcrafted apparel, art, and inspirational merchandise, Artfull Empire Designs is more than just a brand; it’s a movement celebrating creativity, technology, and the power of community.
Dominique Macklin’s artistic journey began in earnest in 2019, when she launched Artfull Inspirations—a precursor to her current venture, Artfull Empire Designs. “I sought to explore how I could effectively harness technology to enhance my creative endeavors.” Dominique explains, reflecting on her early days juggling web development classes and creative projects. “I’m a very hands-on person, and I realized that school was taking up too much time—keeping me from doing what I really wanted to do.” Faced with a choice between formal education and her creative path, Dominique chose the latter, trusting her instincts and embracing the learning curve of building her own business.
Her decision paid off. Artfull Empire Designs is now an umbrella company, serving as a central hub for Dominique’s diverse creative output that includes custom apparel, handbags, totes, and original artwork, all infused with inspiring messages and bold designs. “It’s more of an umbrella company,” she says, “where you can find information about all my art and my projects and find my products that I design in my artwork and my book.”
Dominique’s approach to business is refreshingly practical. She taught herself how to build and maintain her own website. A skill that not only saved her money but also gave her the confidence to navigate the digital landscape. “The more I learned how to do myself, the less cost it would be for me,” she notes. “And when I do need to hire somebody, I know exactly what I need them for and exactly what I need them to do.”
This hands-on mindset extends to every aspect of her craft. From designing graphics and sewing her own McBag collection to experimenting with digital marketing and video production, Dominique is constantly pushing her creative boundaries. She’s even earned certifications in digital marketing and web design, further solidifying her expertise and adaptability.
Art is a family affair for Dominique. Her husband is an abstract artist, and together they participate in local art shows, often sharing a vendor table to showcase their work. “He’d take my art, my bags and stuff,” she says, highlighting the collaborative spirit that fuels their creative endeavors. While her husband maintains his own website, Dominique is open to future design collaborations with other artists, envisioning a world where creatives merge their styles and ideas to create something truly unique.
Dominique’s resilience is rooted in her personal history. As a child, she was diagnosed with hydrocephalus—a condition that required her to spend much of her time indoors, nurturing her love for reading, arts, and crafts. “My mother found these activities to do in a house so I never get bored,” she recalls. “So I used to read, do arts and crafts and so on.” This early experience shaped her creativity and determination, helping her overcome adversity and find her voice as an artist.
In business, Dominique faces the same challenges as many entrepreneurs, especially when it comes to content creation and digital marketing. “Creating content is my biggest challenge right now,” she admits. “I want to be more open with my audience and build my audience.” She’s working to improve her engagement, using social media and Google My Business to connect with customers and drive traffic to her website. “I’m working on my funnels to work from awareness to conversion,” she explains, “and engaging with my audience every day so they know more about me and my company and my mission.”
When she’s not designing or sewing, Dominique finds joy in cooking, experimenting with new recipes, and learning about herbs and healing. “I like to watch food videos and learn different recipes and try different recipes,” she says. Her experience in fine dining has even inspired dreams of opening a banquet hall—a space where she can combine her love of food, art, and community.
Looking ahead, Dominique has big plans for her business. She aims to expand into brick-and-mortar retail, investing in printing and production equipment to bring her customizable products to life in a physical space. “That’s the ultimate goal, to increase my online sales so that I will have the funds to invest in brick and mortar,” she says.
She’s also excited about launching new collections, including designs inspired by her love for Detroit and Michigan. “I want to start marketing the stuff I already have to make room to do newer art and more style,” she explains. And while her website currently features only her own work, she’s open to future collaborations with other artists; merging styles and ideas to create something fresh and innovative.
Artfull Empire Designs is more than just a brand. It’s a celebration of creativity, resilience, and the power of community. Whether you’re looking for a unique handbag, a custom piece of art, or simply a dose of inspiration, Dominique Macklin and her team are ready to welcome you into their world.
