When Jake Lindsay and Shannon Lust set out to open Evolution Gymnastics, they weren’t just starting a business—they were building a community. Located in Middletown, Delaware, Evolution Gymnastics is redefining the sport by creating an inclusive, welcoming environment where anyone can participate, no matter their background, experience, or body type.
Gymnastics has long been associated with rigorous competition, strict body standards, and intense training regiments. But Jake and Shannon had a different vision. “We want to break the wheel when it comes to gymnastics,” says Jake. “There’s a lot of negative energy around body dysmorphia and eating disorders in this sport, and we wanted to create something for everybody.”
This philosophy is at the core of Evolution Gymnastics. The gym is designed for children, teens, and adults of all skill levels, offering everything from recreational classes to competitive programs. Their mission is simple: to help people push past their limits and achieve personal growth in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
While Jake is not a gymnast himself, Shannon has been involved in the sport her entire life. Her mother founded Gold Medal Gymnastics in Smyrna, and gymnastics has always been a part of her story—so much so that there’s even a photo of her mother doing a flyaway off the bars while pregnant with Shannon!
Jake, on the other hand, brings a background in leadership and customer service. A former Marine and service advisor, he understands what it takes to build a business from the ground up. “Shannon shines in coaching, and I handle the business side of things. That’s what makes us a great team,” he says.
Together, they’ve created a space where gymnasts of all ages can thrive. The youngest participant is just a year old, while the oldest is 52. “There’s no such thing as ‘I can’t do it,’” says Jake. “Your body is capable of more than you think—you just have to try.”
Beyond their unique philosophy, Evolution Gymnastics stands out for several reasons:
Starting a business is never easy, but for Jake and Shannon, it was a leap of faith worth taking. In just a few months, they have grown to over 100 members, with numbers climbing every month. “This month, we doubled our revenue from last month, and I’m hoping to do it again,” says Jake.
Their success comes from a mix of strong word-of-mouth, active social media presence, and participation in local events. “Most people don’t even know we’re here,” says Jake. “But once they walk through our doors, they see what makes us different.”
In the next five years, Jake envisions Evolution Gymnastics running smoothly, with a strong team in place and the business thriving on its own. “I want Shannon to be able to focus on what she loves—coaching—while I handle the logistics.” Expansion is a possibility, but for now, the focus is on perfecting what they’ve built.
The ultimate goal? To continue revolutionizing the sport of gymnastics, one athlete and one family at a time.
Whether you’re looking for a fun way to stay active, a serious training program, or a supportive community, Evolution Gymnastics welcomes you. “It’s nothing like you’ve ever seen before,” says Jake. “We’re here to help you be the best version of yourself—no matter where you’re starting from.”
