In the heart of Tucson, Arizona, nestled beneath the majestic Catalina Mountains, Nathan Anderson, L.Ac., has built more than just a healing practice. Through Catalina Acupuncture, he has created a trusted space where traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and compassionate care come together to help patients restore balance, relieve pain, and reconnect with wellness.
With over 21 years of clinical experience and nearly two decades as a teacher of acupuncture and herbal medicine, Nathan brings a deep knowledge of his craft and a warm, down-to-earth approach to every session. Whether he’s treating chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, or digestive and cardiovascular issues, Nathan focuses on the full person—not just the symptoms.
“The joke I tell patients is that acupuncture can help with anything that doesn’t require a 911 call,” Nathan says with a smile. “Musculoskeletal pain, stress, PTSD, headaches, sleep problems, allergies—I’ve seen it all walk through my door.”
Nathan’s journey into acupuncture began with a personal experience. As a college soccer goalkeeper, he suffered a persistent shoulder injury. Traditional treatments left him with limited options. But a visiting friend—an acupuncturist—offered to treat him during a World Cup viewing party. “She needled my leg, and my shoulder pain instantly improved,” he recalls. That moment sparked a deep curiosity in the healing power of acupuncture and changed the trajectory of his life.
At Catalina Acupuncture, patients receive more than just needles. Nathan practices a wide array of TCM modalities including Tuina (Chinese medical bodywork), herbal medicine, cupping, Gua Sha, and heat therapy. “Acupuncture is central,” he says, “but I apply whatever combination of techniques is most appropriate for the individual.”
Many of his patients come in for pain management—both acute and chronic—but he also treats a significant number of people for mental health concerns like anxiety and depression, as well as respiratory and digestive issues.
A patient recently shared, “Nathan is a miracle worker. I suffered from back and knee pain for a long time, and he fixed it for good! He’s so knowledgeable and personable—I’d give him 100 stars!”
Nathan accepts a wide range of insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield and its subsidiaries, UnitedHealthcare, and Humana. He also welcomes personal injury and workers’ comp cases. Importantly, he treats many disabled veterans — making healing accessible to those who have served.
In addition to his private practice, Nathan is faculty at the local acupuncture college, and he serves on the fellowship faculty at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. This role connects him with a robust network of integrative medical professionals across disciplines—from MDs and nutritionists to craniosacral therapists and psychologists.
“If a patient needs a referral to someone who understands integrative care, I can point them in the right direction,” he explains. “It’s a true gift to be part of such a well-rounded community.”
Though Nathan’s acupuncture journey began in California, Tucson has always been his hometown. “I love the food, the art, the mountains—it’s a small-town vibe with big-city offerings,” he shares. His deep local roots and personal investment in the community are part of what make Catalina Acupuncture so trusted.
With a balance of scientific rigor and ancient wisdom, Nathan Anderson is not only treating symptoms—he’s improving lives. And for those curious about acupuncture but hesitant to try, Nathan says, “Let’s just talk. Whether you’re dealing with pain, stress, or curiosity—I’m here to help.”
