In the heart of Texas, where innovation meets sustainability, Michael Schaefer, President and sole owner of Austin Bamboo, has been making waves with his passion for bamboo. With a dedication to creating eco-friendly solutions and a vision for renewable resources, Michael has carved a niche for himself in a unique industry.
A native of Austin, Michael’s journey into bamboo began with a deep appreciation for its versatility and sustainability. Inspired by his 4 years in Japan, where bamboo is integral to many aspects of daily life, Michael brought his global insights back home to Texas. What started as a hobby crafting bamboo items quickly grew into a flourishing business. Today, Austin Bamboo offers a variety of services and products, including bamboo fencing, furniture, kitchen accessories, and even bamboo leaf tea.
Michael’s work is not just about selling products—it’s about solving problems. For homeowners, he provides expert bamboo removal and maintenance services, ensuring that this fast-growing plant stays under control. For eco-conscious customers, his handcrafted bamboo creations demonstrate the endless possibilities of this renewable material.
“A lot of people think bamboo is just invasive, but it’s one of the strongest, most versatile resources on the planet,” Michael shares. “It has a tensile strength greater than steel and is naturally resistant to mold and decomposition.”
For nearly a decade, Michael has operated Austin Bamboo single-handedly, driven by his passion for the craft. His work ethic and attention to detail have earned him loyal customers across the Austin area, from Round Rock to Cedar Park. While he dreams of expanding into a warehouse to showcase his creations and teach others about bamboo’s potential, his dedication to quality remains unwavering.
Michael’s journey has taken him across the world from the USA to Asia. He also had a Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Herbal Medicine. These experiences have shaped his innovative approach to business and his commitment to sustainability.
“I’ve always believed in using what’s available and making the most of it,” Michael says. “Bamboo is a resource that’s both practical and beautiful—it’s a privilege to work with it every day.”
Michael is also an active member of the Texas Bamboo Society, contributing his knowledge and skills to promote bamboo as a sustainable material. He offers discounts to veterans and society members, ensuring his business remains accessible to the community he values so deeply.
With plans to expand his business and continue his mission of promoting bamboo, Michael Schaefer is a true local hero. His innovative spirit, dedication to sustainability, and love for his craft make him a standout figure in the Austin area. Whether you’re in need of bamboo products or expert guidance on bamboo management, Michael and Austin Bamboo are here to help.
