Foley, AL – Lisa Mears and her husband Buck Mears are the passionate owners of Flip City Academy, a beloved gymnastics and dance school in Foley, Alabama. For over two decades, this dynamic duo has been nurturing young talents, providing a space where kids can learn, grow, and flip their way to success.
A Vision for the Whole City
The name “Flip City” was born from a simple yet ambitious idea: to get the entire community involved in gymnastics. Lisa recalls, “We wanted something catchy that people would recognize. Since we’re all about flipping, ‘Flip City’ just felt right.” And so, Flip City Academy became a beacon for aspiring gymnasts and dancers in the region.
A Hub of Gymnastics and Dance
Flip City Academy is not just a gymnastics school; it’s a comprehensive training facility offering gymnastics, dance, tumbling, and cheerleading programs. With a mix of recreational and competitive options, children from all over Baldwin County and beyond flock to Flip City to hone their skills.
“We teach kids from age four up to high school,” says Lisa. “Many of our students start young and stay with us for years.”
Serving the Community
Lisa and Buck are dedicated to making gymnastics and dance accessible to everyone. “Most of our students come from Central Baldwin County, but we also have kids from Pensacola, Orange Beach, and even Locksley,” Lisa explains. The academy’s inclusive approach has helped it grow into a well-respected institution in the local area.
Tailored Programs for Every Child
What sets Flip City Academy apart is its unique ability to offer both dance and gymnastics training under one roof. “Parents love that their kids can do both here,” Lisa notes. “They don’t have to shuttle them between different schools. We provide high-level training for both gymnastics and dance, which is quite unusual.”
A Journey from Passion to Profession
Lisa’s journey into this business was driven by her lifelong love for gymnastics and dance. “I’ve been involved in gymnastics since I was a teenager,” she shares. After moving to Foley, Lisa saw a gap in the market and decided to fill it. “There wasn’t a place for our daughter to continue her training, so we started teaching on the side, and it just grew from there.”
A Legacy of Success
Over the years, Flip City Academy has seen countless students achieve their dreams. Many have gone on to cheerleading teams, college dance squads, and even Team USA. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see our students succeed,” Lisa says proudly. One of their standout students is currently on Team USA for cheerleading.
Building a Supportive Community
Flip City Academy isn’t just about gymnastics and dance; it’s about building a community. The academy regularly participates in local events and supports various causes. “We always get involved in hurricane relief efforts and community drives,” Lisa mentions. Being part of the Foley Chamber of Commerce also helps Lisa and Buck stay connected with other local businesses.
A Talented Team
The academy’s success wouldn’t be possible without its dedicated team of coaches. Carly Wainwright, the head gymnastics coach, and Amanda Wade, the dance team director, bring their expertise and passion to the school. “Amanda has led us to our most decorated year yet,” Lisa beams. “And Carly has been with us for ten years, training our competitive teams.”
The Backbone of Flip City: Buck Mears
Buck Mears plays a crucial role in the daily operations of Flip City Academy. Juggling his responsibilities as a coach with his career as a realtor at Keller Williams, Buck is a well-loved figure at the academy. His dedication to the students and his ability to balance multiple careers make him an invaluable part of the team. “Buck’s commitment to the kids is incredible,” Lisa says. “He inspires them both in the gym and in their personal lives.”
A Personal Touch
Lisa and Buck’s commitment to Flip City Academy extends beyond the business. They are deeply rooted in the community, living in Foley, enjoying boating, and spending time with their grandkids. “We’re high school sweethearts,” Lisa smiles. “Next year, we’re celebrating our 40th anniversary with a trip to Hawaii.”
Looking Ahead
As Flip City Academy continues to thrive, Lisa and Buck remain focused on helping every student reach their potential. “Every achievement, big or small, is significant to us,” Lisa says. Whether it’s a child nailing their first backflip or making it onto a competitive team, Lisa, Buck, and their team are there to support and celebrate every step of the way.
In Lisa’s words, “Kids walk in and flip out!” It’s this infectious enthusiasm and dedication that make Flip City Academy a cherished part of the Foley community.
