Detroit, MI – In the heart of Detroit, a rising star in the fashion world is making waves, and her name is LaKendra Norman. She’s the creative force and CEO of Noir Royale Brand, a fashion line that’s not only capturing the attention of hip hop fans and urban streetwear enthusiasts but is also leaving a lasting impact on the community. We sat down with LaKendra to learn more about her journey, her brand, and her mission to bring quality, accessibility, and positive change to the world.
LaKendra understands that her customers want exclusivity, and her brand delivers just that. With her brands being featured in major fashion magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair, LaKendra comments, “When you wear Noir Royale, you won’t look like anyone else. It’s about expressing your individualism. As Coco Chanel said, ‘The best don’t be like the rest of them, darling.’”
LaKendra Norman is more than a fashion designer; she’s a visionary, a community leader, and a force for positive change. Her story is deeply rooted in the rich history of Detroit. The name Noir Royale Brand was inspired by the city’s French heritage, where “noir royale” means Black Royal. Detroit, once predominantly Black, has always held a sense of royalty for its residents. LaKendra’s brand aims to convey that regal essence through its clothing, offering a feeling of exclusivity and individualism without the economic exploitation of competitor brands that overcharge hardworking people with lesser quality products.
Noir Royale Brand started as a small t-shirt business, but it has since evolved into a complete fashion brand with a commitment to quality and craftsmanship. LaKendra’s experience as a store manager for Foot Locker provided her with invaluable insights of how she can provide higher quality gear at fairer rates. Inspired by the degeneration of elite brands in today’s urban fashion and trends, LaKendra has a mission for Noir Royale Brand to surpass that competition by offering a range of superior products that also empower her customers through affordability.
From cotton joggers to custom-designed varsity jackets and trench coats, she even offers handmade 100% leather footwear crafted in Italy. These are designed by LaKendra herself, at a rate that the hardworking people in Detroit and other urban areas find accessible. The focus is clear. Hardworking people in Detroit and other urban areas deserve quality, comfort, and custom style without being exploited. LaKendra comments, “Every dollar I save my customers is a dollar that can go back into empowering the community.”
LaKendra left a well-paying mortgage banking job to enter the fashion world as a bootstrapping entrepreneur. This wasn’t just about achieving personal success for her. It was about creating a brand that reflects the values she holds dear. LaKendra’s vision extends beyond fashion to making a positive impact in Detroit and other urban areas facing similar challenges.
In fact, she envisions a nonprofit initiative called “7907” named after her grandparents’ address. The goal of “7907” is to be a turnaround shelter that offers more than just a place to stay. it will be a place where individuals can learn financial literacy, computer skills, and even improve their literacy rates. It will also be a way to address poverty and mental health issues and to transform lives.
LaKendra says, “When I was younger, my grandparents helped raise me, and they would give out boxes of food to people. They even took in one of my cousins’ friends during high school because he had no parents. Their spirit of giving was instilled in me so deeply that when I got older, I started cooking in my kitchen, and when I had food left over, I would go out and talk to people in Detroit and feed them. I just like kicking it with my community. My fashion business is my passion. But my heart lies with my city and my upbringing and what my grandparents taught me about giving back. I want to bring people off the street.”
LaKendra continues to give back as the published author of Toodle Loo: Everybody Can’t Go series, as a mindfulness coach with The Mindset Reset and as a co-host of Love them Norman’s Podcast where she and her husband share relationship insights from their 22+ year marriage. She is a proud advocate against domestic violence and enjoys empowering women and youth. For a deeper dive into her work, including radio and magazine interviews, visit www.linktr.ee/noirroyalebrand
