Shawn Torres wants to turn every garden in Denver into a pristine and manicured oasis!

For the past 5 years, Shawn Torres and his Excellent Landscape and Lawn Service team have been caring for the gardens in Denver. Shawn, married for 11 years with 4 children, is the owner of Excellent Landscape and Lawn Service. Although born in San Jose, Shawn moved with his family to Denver when he was 3 months old and was basically raised in Denver and of course a raving Denver Broncos fan.

His eldest daughter plays club basketball, and the two younger ones are into football. Between them, they are either at practices, or games or something. In their free time, they just like to chill and spend quality time as a family.

We sat down with Shawn for a quick interview –

Q: Why do you do what you do?

A: “I love people and nature, and this is the ideal job that allows me to have both. Quality family time means the world to me, and this job gives me the flexibility and time to do whatever whenever with my kids and wife. I just have to check that the schedule is clear, and I don’t have to check in with anybody.

My attitude has always been that there is enough money out there in the world not to be broke. There’s always somebody looking for a service to be done that they either don’t have the time to do, or they just don’t want to do.”

Q: How did you get into this profession?

A: “It was totally by accident. I’m actually a certified welder. We were always looking for a couple of dollars to see us through month-end. I started mowing some lawns before going to my full-time job and after checking out. I could use the equipment that I had with no need for investment. That is how I started with just a lawnmower and a weed Wacker. Before long I was getting more and more phone calls.

As it happened, I was receiving so many calls at work and had to put people on hold that the company decided to let me go.

Someone then asked me to help them out and because summer is their slow time it will give me time to run my own landscape and lawn services business. That worked fine, but then I told my wife to give me one month to get the landscaping and lawn service company off the ground. If I don’t make more money during that month than before, I will go back to welding.

That was five years ago, and I never looked back.”

Q: Being a landscaper, Shawn works directly with many people, we asked him what’s the most unusual situation that ever happened to him on the job?

A: “You must have a sense of humor when you work the whole day out in the sun. I had a tree branch that almost took me out on a ladder one day. While I was trimming a branch standing on a ladder almost 15 feet in the air, I was cutting it and thought nothing of it when the next moment it just fell and hit me. It hit the arm of the guy that was helping and gave him a nasty bruise. As the branch swung down it almost took the ladder out from under me and scared the hell out of me. So that was close, but we all had a laugh when we got over the initial shock.“

 Q: If you could share one tip with the readers for choosing a landscaper, what would it be?

A: “You don’t want somebody that just wants to wing it. Ask about their references and ask questions about how they will go about doing the job at hand. You must be able to relate and connect with the landscaper, bounce ideas off each other. It is critical for you and the landscaper to be on the same page and that there is a mutually agreed plan in place.“

 Q: What do you love about your community/city?

A: “We are living here for a long time and the community is awesome and the people are caring.   Luckily for me in the neighborhoods around here, the people take pride in how their properties look and they care about their yards. “
