Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Heather for an interview that revealed not just the story behind her business, but the warmth and determination that make her a standout local business owner.
Heather’s journey into teeth whitening began decades ago when she started working for a dentist in high school through a work program in the 1990s. “Minimum wage was $4.15, but the office ed program paid $5 an hour,” she laughed. “I was like, I need gas money for my car—sign me up!” That first gig, filing charts and sterilizing instruments, sparked a career that would span every facet of general dentistry, from endodontics to periodontics. Over the years, Heather earned her license as a registered dental assistant and kept it current, even as her path took an exciting turn.
When COVID hit, the dental world shifted dramatically. “Everything we do is aerosol, and we’re in people’s faces,” Heather explained. Wearing hazmat suits and navigating new protocols in the Texas summer left her ready for a change. That’s when the idea of teeth whitening as a standalone service clicked. “Dentistry can be scary—it’s the number two fear among humans,” she said. “Why go to a dentist’s office for a luxury-like teeth whitening when you can have it done in a relaxed, welcoming space?”
Three years ago, at the age of 47, Heather took the leap and opened her business. Now celebrating its third anniversary, her studio offers a refreshing alternative to the traditional dental experience—no drills, no suction, and no lectures about flossing. “People love coming here because it’s not a dentist’s office,” she said with a smile. “And at $225, it’s a fraction of the $500 to $700 you’d pay elsewhere.”
What makes Heather’s business truly special is her expertise and care. With her dental background, she brings a level of professionalism that’s rare in the non-dentist whitening world. “Anyone can buy the equipment and read the instructions, but I think you absolutely should have a dental background,” she emphasized. She educates her clients, turning away those who wouldn’t benefit from whitening due to conditions like calculus buildup, and ensures every session is tailored to the individual. “I can tell if your teeth will whiten well just by looking at the shade,” she said. “It’s like skin—some tan, some fry!”
Her personal touch extends beyond the chair. Heather hand-writes thank-you cards to every new client, complete with a QR code encouraging reviews. “My repeat business is really taking off,” she shared. “Most clients come twice a year, and I’ve just launched a rewards program to thank them for referrals—it’s super easy to earn a free whitening.” It’s this blend of skill, honesty, and appreciation that keeps her clients coming back.
Heather’s vision doesn’t stop at her brick-and-mortar studio. She’s expanding into mobile teeth whitening, bringing her services directly to clients’ homes. “I’m going to a husband and wife’s house tonight,” she said during our chat. “They’re existing clients, and it’s so convenient for them—the kids can play upstairs while I whiten their teeth.” She recently placed second in a pitch competition with over 40 applicants, showcasing her mobile business idea. “I’ll never get rid of my studio—it’s my escape from the house where my husband works from home—but mobile services are the future.”
Beyond her business, Heather’s love for her community shines through. A board member of Meals on Wheels and an active participant in Denton’s Main Street Association, she’s passionate about giving back. “I love where I live,” she said. “We have two colleges, 65,000 students, and a tight-knit local business scene. Everyone supports each other here.” Whether she’s donating her time or playing on a women’s soccer team, Heather’s energy and enthusiasm are contagious.
Outside of work, Heather keeps busy with her husband, their seven-month-old pit bull-heeler puppy, and an active lifestyle. “We love going out, working out, and hiking,” she said, chuckling about the puppy’s antics. “She’s smart, but she’s got that puppy brain—we’ll see how she handles summer!” She also bartends on the side for a friend’s business. “It’s fun, and it’s a nice bonus,” she added.
Reflecting on her journey, Heather sees starting her business as the most significant chapter of her life. “I’ve learned so much—how to manage my time, prioritize, and take advantage of resources I never knew existed,” she said. “I’m not available 24/7, though—Sundays are my day to unplug and recharge.”
