In today’s ever-evolving marketplace, small businesses remain the heart and soul of local communities. Barbara DeNardo, the proud owner of The Hardware Store, exemplifies this connection with her family-owned hardware and gift shop. Located in the scenic region of Lake Luzerne, Barbara and her store have been essential to the area since 1948. But what makes this store stand out in an era dominated by big-box retailers? It’s all about the personal touch.

Barbara’s store isn’t just another hardware shop—it’s a cornerstone of local life. Initially taken over by her parents in 1986, Barbara and her husband Frank stepped in to manage it seven years ago. Over the decades, it has become a trusted place for essential services like crucial making, glass cutting, and blade sharpening. However, one thing customers know they’ll find here is exceptional service and personal attention, which large chains can’t offer.
“We offer advice and service and answer questions,” Barbara explains. This hands-on approach helps customers solve their problems, whether they’re plumbing issues or finding the perfect tool for the job. This focus on personalized care sets The Hardware Store apart from competitors.
While the store has maintained its classic services, Barbara has added a special touch by incorporating a gift shop above the hardware store. “Since we took it over, we put in a gift shop upstairs,” she says with pride. Expanding into new areas benefits her business and adds something unique to the local community.

Barbara and her team serve a broad area, from Lake Luzerne to parts of Queensbury and beyond. It’s not just about hardware—it’s about solving people’s everyday problems with a personalized touch.
Barbara’s shop has carved a niche by specializing in what she calls “old plumbing” and “old electric.” In today’s world, where many hardware stores focus on newer models, The Hardware Store still stocks those hard-to-find parts for older homes and projects.
“People come to us instead of going to Lowe’s or Home Depot because we can offer something they don’t—personalized advice and hard-to-find items,” Barbara notes. This deep knowledge of older systems keeps customers coming back.
Running a family-owned business can be challenging, but it’s a labor of love for Barbara. The shop was almost sold when her mother passed away, but Barbara and Frank decided to take a leap of faith. They kept the store running, honoring its long history while ensuring its future.
Barbara is incredibly proud of the small, tight-knit team working alongside her. With three employees currently, she hopes to grow when they become a Milwaukee tool dealer next year, further expanding their offerings.
Barbara has big plans for The Hardware Store‘s future. With expansions underway, including plans for additional outdoor products and grills, she aims to keep growing the business while staying true to its roots.
Barbara’s journey from taking over the family business to making it thrive in a competitive marketplace is a testament to her dedication and hard work. Her focus on providing high-quality service with a personal touch has ensured the continued success of The Hardware Store.
If you’re ever in the Lake Luzerne area and need hardware supplies or a unique gift, Barbara DeNardo’s Hardware Store is the place to go. It’s a perfect example of how small businesses can still compete—and thrive—by offering something that big box stores just can’t: a human touch. Visit their website to see what they’re all about!
