The Power of Community: How Fairfax Sugar Shack Thrived Through Adversity

For Amanda “Mandy” Kierbow-Toy, owner of Fairfax Sugar Shack, the past seven years have been a journey of resilience and connection. Like many small business owners, she faced a defining moment during the COVID-19 pandemic when her day spa was forced to close for nearly nine months.

“I never thought I’d be on unemployment,” Mandy reflects. “I had just come off my best year, and suddenly, everything stopped.”

But Sugar Shack was more than a business—it was a community. Clients and colleagues celebrated milestones together and supported each other through hardships. When the shutdown hit, that same community rallied around Mandy. Her landlord provided rent relief, clients bought gift certificates, and some even invited her to their backyards for socially distanced sugaring sessions.

“A lot of spas didn’t make it,” she says. “I did because of the people around me.”

Curiosity and Reinvention: The Story Behind Fairfax Sugar Shack

Mandy’s journey to Fairfax was fueled by curiosity. She moved across the country in search of something meaningful and found her calling in natural beauty and self-care. Instead of seeing setbacks as obstacles, she embraced them as opportunities.

The name “Sugar Shack” began as an inside joke, referencing the tiny shack she first lived in. Over time, it became a brand symbolizing warmth and transformation. Mandy introduced sugaring as an alternative to traditional waxing and later developed her own skincare line, Tyler Allen, for those sensitive to fragrances and chemicals.

But her real strength lies in connection. She listens, adapts, and innovates based on her clients’ needs, whether launching mother-daughter specials or helping Fairfax locals age naturally and gracefully.

Celebrating a Milestone: Best of Marin Winner

Winning Pacific Sun’s Best of Marin was a meaningful moment for Mandy.

“I’ve never gone out of my way to win anything,” she admits. “So to be recognized—it’s the biggest honor I could have received.”

Fairfax Sugar Shack’s loyal following has always been a testament to the care Mandy provides, and the award is a well-earned recognition of her dedication.

Fairfax: A Town Like No Other

For Mandy, Fairfax is more than a town—it’s home.

“I was meant to be here,” she says. “To meet my husband, open my business, raise my family.”

With its deep appreciation for nature and strong sense of community, Fairfax has a way of aligning people with their paths.

“Jimmy—my husband—calls it the center of the universe,” she laughs. “And honestly, it kind of is.”

Expanding the Vision: Sugar Shack’s Future

Mandy envisions Sugar Shack evolving into a full-service wellness space with multiple practitioners offering sound healing, Reiki, yoga, and more. A key part of this growth is Milli Woolworth-Johnson, an expert in clinical skincare and beauty enhancements.

“Milli has this calm presence that makes clients feel at ease,” Mandy says. “She’s great with teens, incredibly detail-oriented, and just makes people feel comfortable.”

With her expertise, Sugar Shack now offers subtle yet transformative beauty services. “You don’t walk out looking like you had work done—you just look refreshed,” Mandy explains.

More Than a Self-care Spa—A Community

As Sugar Shack continues to evolve, its foundation remains unchanged: love, care, and community.

“Loving your skin starts with giving your skin some love,” Mandy says, echoing the spa’s tagline. “But honestly, that goes beyond skin care. It’s about self-care, about showing up for yourself and for others.”

With an unwavering commitment to her clients and a vision for growth, Mandy has turned Sugar Shack into more than just a beauty studio—it’s a place where people come together, support one another, and leave feeling brighter.

And in a town like Fairfax, that’s what makes it feel like home.
