Mertiss J. “MJ ” Thompson, the founder of The Winning Edge Academy, located in Seattle, Washington, is who you need to see. While The Winning Edge Academy name suggests it is a school, it isn’t the ‘traditional” type of school. Since 1998, MJ teaches clients how to reach their full potential. He believes that everyone is put on this Earth holding on to a gift. That gift should be shared with others along our path in this life. I asked MJ to tell me a little about himself, about where he has been, and what he has done in his life. He joined the Navy at age 17. He wanted to play baseball and to be a journalist. During his time, he found himself excelling at baseball, then going on to write for the Naval newspaper. Since then, MJ has written and published ten books.

MJ started his journey to Seattle as an artist. “An African American painter with no knowledge of the area”, is how MJ worded it. He met a woman not long after arriving that
wanted to represent him, as she saw what wonderful work he did. When he came to Seattle, he promised himself that he would never be a starving artist, that he would always find a way to make his dreams work. MJ has since established an Art Gallery.

I asked MJ a few questions concerning what he thought about different things. The first being what he feels sets him apart from the competition. His response was, “I have many more techniques for implementation to help my clients reach their full potential.” I went on to ask if he was from and lives in the Seattle area. He is originally from California but has lived in Seattle for 35 years. An interesting little note he wanted to share was, “When I was teaching art, I once taught Debbie Turner, 1990 Miss America!” In his spare time, MJ likes to write, paint (which he sometimes sells), is an avid reader, and he golfs. He is a Master Golfer and is a member of the US Golf Teachers Association.

MJ headed out of the art academy in San Francisco with no idea how to make a living. He knew he wanted to be a teacher, but had no experience. He started giving free art lessons. This led to his first art teaching position, as he was noticed for his talent and his way of showing others how to create beautiful things. The school he was hired for was in the South. It was a segregated school, and as an African American, he was the very first to be hired by the district for that school. MJ shared that “it was the best job I have ever had in my lifetime”.

I asked MJ for one tip for readers looking for a life coach, he replied with “Become an avid reader. Read about people who became what they wanted to become. Be your own
researcher. You can be anything you put your mind to. We are all here to serve others in some capacity.” MJ personally volunteers with soldiers with PTSD. His goal is to one day start a non-profit to help those that are homeless or have some type of mental illness.

Lastly, I asked MJ of the most influential client interaction he’s had. He says that there have been so many, but the one that sticks out in his mind and always will, was this – “A client called and asked me to help with her dog. I use a technique called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), and she wondered if it would work on him. She brought him to me, he was very listless and lethargic. I worked on him for a while, using EFT. After I was done, he hopped right up, and on his way, he went.”
